Building your pipeline or Using Airbyte

Airbyte is the only open source solution empowering data teams  to meet all their growing custom business demands in the new AI era.

Building in-house pipelines
Bespoke pipelines are:
  • Inconsistent and inaccurate data
  • Laborious and expensive
  • Brittle and inflexible
Furthermore, you will need to build and maintain Y x Z pipelines with Y sources and Z destinations to cover all your needs.
After Airbyte
Airbyte connections are:
  • Reliable and accurate
  • Extensible and scalable for all your needs
  • Deployed and governed your way
All your pipelines in minutes, however custom they are, thanks to Airbyte’s connector marketplace and AI Connector Builder.

Start syncing with Airbyte in 3 easy steps within 10 minutes

Set up a Xero connector in Airbyte

Connect to Xero or one of 400+ pre-built or 10,000+ custom connectors through simple account authentication.

Set up BigQuery for your extracted Xero data

Select BigQuery where you want to import data from your Xero source to. You can also choose other cloud data warehouses, databases, data lakes, vector databases, or any other supported Airbyte destinations.

Configure the Xero to BigQuery in Airbyte

This includes selecting the data you want to extract - streams and columns -, the sync frequency, where in the destination you want that data to be loaded.

How to Sync Xero to BigQuery Manually

  1. Access Xero API:
    • Register an application in Xero to get API credentials (Consumer Key and Consumer Secret).
    • Set up OAuth 1.0a credentials to authenticate your application with the Xero API.
  2. API Requests:
    • Use the Xero API to request the data you need. This can be done using REST API calls.
    • You may need to paginate through the results if you’re dealing with large datasets.
  3. Export Data:
    • Export the data in a machine-readable format such as JSON or CSV.
    • Ensure you handle any rate limiting or API restrictions during this process.
  1. Data Transformation:
    • Convert the exported data into a format that is compatible with BigQuery. JSON and CSV are both acceptable, but you may need to transform the data structure to match your BigQuery schema.
  2. Data Cleaning:
    • Clean the data to ensure that it meets BigQuery’s requirements. This may include removing or modifying any special characters, ensuring proper data types, and handling null values.
  3. File Storage:
    • Store the transformed and cleaned data files in a location accessible for BigQuery import. Google Cloud Storage is a recommended option.
  1. Create a BigQuery Project:
    • If you haven’t already, create a new project in the Google Cloud Console.
  2. Enable BigQuery API:
    • Enable the BigQuery API for your project.
  3. Create a Dataset:
    • In the BigQuery UI, create a new dataset where your Xero data will reside.
  4. Create Tables:
    • Define the schema for your tables based on the Xero data you are importing.
  1. Upload to Google Cloud Storage:
    • Upload your prepared files to Google Cloud Storage using the gsutil command-line tool or the Cloud Console.
  2. BigQuery Data Load:
    • Use the BigQuery web UI, command-line tool, or API to create a load job that points to the files on Google Cloud Storage.
    • Specify the dataset and table where the data should be imported.
    • Set the appropriate file format (CSV or JSON) and any other relevant options (such as field delimiters, header rows, etc.).
  3. Monitor Import Job:
    • Monitor the progress of the import job in the BigQuery UI. Check for any errors or warnings that may indicate issues with the data or schema.
  1. Check Data:
    • Run some queries against the imported data to ensure it has been imported correctly and completely.
  2. Data Validation:
    • Validate that the data in BigQuery matches the original data from Xero. This may involve comparing record counts, checking key fields, and verifying that transformations have been applied correctly.
  1. Automation Script:
    • Write a script that automates the export from Xero, transformation, and loading into BigQuery. This can be done using a programming language of your choice, such as Python.
  2. Scheduling:
    • Use a service like Google Cloud Scheduler to run your automation script at regular intervals.

Notes:

  • Make sure you comply with Xero’s API terms of use.
  • Be mindful of the security of your data throughout this process. Use encrypted connections and secure methods for storing credentials and data files.
  • You may need to handle incremental data updates if your Xero data changes frequently. This will involve keeping track of changes and only importing the new or updated records.

FAQs

ETL, an acronym for Extract, Transform, Load, is a vital data integration process. It involves extracting data from diverse sources, transforming it into a usable format, and loading it into a database, data warehouse or data lake. This process enables meaningful data analysis, enhancing business intelligence.

Xero is the online accounting software for your business which connects you to your accountant, bank, bookkeeper, and other business apps. Xero is an well known accounting system that have designed for small and growing businesses with their trusted advisors. You don't need to have an accounting degree to use the Xero Accounting app for a small business owner. It is also a cloud-based small business accounting software having tools for managing bank reconciliation, inventory, invoicing, purchasing, expenses.

This can be done by building a data pipeline manually, usually a Python script (you can leverage a tool as Apache Airflow for this). This process can take more than a full week of development. Or it can be done in minutes on Airbyte in three easy steps:
1. Set up Xero to BigQuery as a source connector (using Auth, or usually an API key)
2. Choose a destination (more than 50 available destination databases, data warehouses or lakes) to sync data too and set it up as a destination connector
3. Define which data you want to transfer from Xero to BigQuery and how frequently
You can choose to self-host the pipeline using Airbyte Open Source or have it managed for you with Airbyte Cloud.

ELT, standing for Extract, Load, Transform, is a modern take on the traditional ETL data integration process. In ELT, data is first extracted from various sources, loaded directly into a data warehouse, and then transformed. This approach enhances data processing speed, analytical flexibility and autonomy.

ETL and ELT are critical data integration strategies with key differences. ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) transforms data before loading, ideal for structured data. In contrast, ELT (Extract, Load, Transform) loads data before transformation, perfect for processing large, diverse data sets in modern data warehouses. ELT is becoming the new standard as it offers a lot more flexibility and autonomy to data analysts.
