Talend built its name on open source, and that era is over. Qlik acquired Talend in 2023 and retired the free Talend Open Studio on January 31, 2024. Every current edition, sold as Qlik Talend Cloud, is paid and quote-only. Airbyte is the open-source path forward. Today Talend is sold as Qlik Talend Cloud in four editions, plus Talend Data Fabric for hybrid and on-prem estates. Pipelines are built as Java-based jobs in Talend Studio.
The end of Talend Open Studio
Qlik announced in November 2023 that it would discontinue Talend Open Studio, and it was retired on January 31, 2024. Existing installs still run, but get no updates, security patches or vendor help.
Qlik's own support team has said continued use carries risk, including gaps against HIPAA, SOC and ISO 27001 requirements and unpatched vulnerabilities. As SaaS APIs change, Open Studio components will drift out of compatibility.
That leaves two paths: buy Qlik Talend Cloud, or move to a maintained open-source platform. Airbyte is that platform.
Pricing: quote-only meters vs. published plans
Qlik doesn't publish Talend pricing. Editions are metered on up to three dimensions: data moved, job executions and job duration. Third-party reports put Starter at $12,000–$30,000 a year and larger estates well into six figures.
Airbyte is free to self-host with Core. Cloud starts at $20/month (Standard) and $189/month (Plus). Pro and Enterprise Flex price on Data Workers, dedicated compute capacity, so your bill doesn't rise with data volume or job counts.
Talend pipelines are Java jobs designed in Studio. That gives control, but every job is code to build, version, test and upgrade, and Studio skills are increasingly specialized.
Airbyte connectors are configured, not coded. Pick a source and destination and syncs run in minutes, with incremental loads, CDC and schema propagation built in. Engineers can still manage everything as code with the API, Terraform provider and PyAirbyte, and run transforms in dbt.
Deployment and control
Airbyte runs four ways on one codebase: free self-hosted Core, managed cloud, hybrid with an Airbyte-managed control plane, or fully on-prem with Enterprise Flex. Open Studio users who self-hosted get the same control, now with support and security updates available.
Openness and community
Airbyte's core is open source with 1,000+ contributors and 25,000+ community members. You can inspect, fix and extend any connector.
With Open Studio gone, Talend's community is now tied to paid Qlik products.
