About Matillion
Matillion is a cloud ELT platform founded in Manchester in 2011. In early 2026 it rebranded its Data Productivity Cloud as Maia Foundation, led by Maia, an AI agent that builds pipelines from plain-language prompts. Transformations run as SQL pushed down into your warehouse. It also still sells Matillion ETL, an older product with a separate meter.
Connectors and destinations
Airbyte offers 700+ connectors, roughly 4x Matillion's 150+. That gap shows up in the long tail: niche SaaS tools, regional apps, files and unstructured sources.
Matillion's connectors are built to load into Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks or Redshift. Airbyte also writes to Postgres, MySQL, S3, Apache Iceberg lakehouses and vector databases. If you change warehouses, your Airbyte pipelines move with you.
Pricing: published vs. unpublished
Airbyte publishes its prices. Standard starts at $20/month, Plus at $189/month for 40 credits. Pro and Enterprise Flex use capacity-based Data Workers, so you pay for compute capacity, not rows or GBs.
Matillion publishes the meter but not the price. Credits burn at 1 per task hour for loads, 3 per task hour for transforms, and 70 per extra developer each month. The dollar value of a credit sits only in your order form. Third-party reports put small-team spend at $20,000–$35,000 a year.
Two more costs sit outside Matillion's credits:
- Warehouse compute. Pushdown transforms run on your Snowflake or Databricks bill.
- Runaway jobs. Matillion's docs say budgets do not restrict or block usage, so a stuck pipeline keeps burning credits and compute.
Change data capture
Airbyte includes CDC on every plan, from self-hosted Core up, across popular databases.
Matillion's streaming CDC is listed only on the Scale plan. It supports five relational sources and no MongoDB or other NoSQL databases. Each streaming pipeline needs its own runner.
Deployment and control
Airbyte runs four ways on one codebase: self-hosted Core, managed cloud, hybrid with an Airbyte-managed control plane, or fully on-prem with Enterprise Flex. Your data can stay entirely inside your boundary.
Matillion runs as Full SaaS by default. Hybrid SaaS, where you host the runner, is a Scale-plan feature, and the runner still needs outbound access to Matillion's control plane.
Openness and lock-in
Airbyte's core is open source, with 1,000+ contributors. You can read the connector code, fix it, and run it yourself for free.
Matillion is proprietary. Pipelines built on its canvas live in its format, and the platform has renamed products and deprecated components through 2026.
