Chase Zieman

“Airbyte helped us accelerate our progress by years, compared to our competitors. We don’t need to worry about connectors and focus on creating value for our users instead of building infrastructure. That’s priceless. The time and energy saved allows us to disrupt and grow faster.”

Rupak Patel
"With Airbyte, we could just push a few buttons, allow API access, and bring all the data into Google BigQuery. By blending all the different marketing data sources, we can gain valuable insights."
How to Sync to Manually
Step 1: Export Data from Smartsheet
Begin by exporting the data from Smartsheet. Open your desired sheet in Smartsheet, click on "File" in the menu, and select "Export." Choose the "Export to Excel" option to download the sheet data as an Excel file. This file will typically be saved in .xlsx format, which is easy to manipulate for data transformation.
Step 2: Convert Excel to CSV
Open the exported Excel file using a spreadsheet application like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets. Save or export the file as a CSV (Comma-Separated Values) file. This format is more suitable for importing into databases like ClickHouse due to its simplicity and wide compatibility.
Step 3: Prepare the CSV for ClickHouse
Open the CSV file in a text editor or a tool like Excel to ensure that the data is clean and formatted correctly. Make any necessary modifications, such as removing unnecessary columns, ensuring consistent data types, or fixing any data anomalies. Save the file once the data is ready for import.
Step 4: Set Up ClickHouse Database and Table
If you haven’t already set up your ClickHouse database, do so by accessing your ClickHouse server. Use a ClickHouse client or command-line interface to create a database and table that matches the structure of your CSV file. Define the table schema to ensure it matches the data types and structure present in your CSV file.
Example SQL to create a table:
```sql
CREATE TABLE my_table (
column1 String,
column2 Int32,
column3 Date
) ENGINE = MergeTree()
ORDER BY column1;
```
Step 5: Transfer the CSV to ClickHouse Server
Transfer the CSV file to the server where ClickHouse is installed. You can use secure copy protocol (SCP) or file transfer protocol (FTP) to move your CSV file to the server's file system. Ensure that the file is accessible and located in a known directory on the server.
Step 6: Import CSV Data into ClickHouse
Use the ClickHouse command-line client to import the CSV data into your table. Navigate to the directory containing your CSV file and execute the following command to load the data:
```bash
clickhouse-client --query="INSERT INTO my_table FORMAT CSV" < /path/to/yourfile.csv
```
Replace `/path/to/yourfile.csv` with the actual path to your CSV file. This command reads the CSV file and inserts the data into the specified ClickHouse table.
Step 7: Verify Data Import
After importing the data, verify that it has been correctly loaded into ClickHouse. You can execute a simple SELECT query to check the data:
```sql
SELECT * FROM my_table LIMIT 10;
```
Review the output to ensure that the data looks as expected and matches the content from the original Smartsheet. If there are any issues, revisit the previous steps to make necessary corrections.
This guide provides a direct method to move data manually without relying on third-party tools, ensuring full control over the data migration process.
