"With Airbyte, we could just push a few buttons, allow API access, and bring all the data into Google BigQuery. By blending all the different marketing data sources, we can gain valuable insights."
How to Sync to Manually
Step 1: Understand the TVmaze API
Before starting, familiarize yourself with the TVmaze schedule API. The API provides endpoints that return JSON data for TV schedules. Review the API documentation to understand the available endpoints and query parameters you can use to filter and retrieve the desired data efficiently.
Step 2: Set Up Your Environment
Prepare your environment for data extraction and storage. Ensure you have Python installed, as you'll use it to interact with the TVmaze API and ClickHouse. Install necessary Python libraries such as `requests` for HTTP requests and `clickhouse-driver` to interact with ClickHouse.
Step 3: Extract Data from TVmaze
Write a Python script to send HTTP requests to the TVmaze API and extract the schedule data. Use the `requests` library to call the API, and handle the JSON response to extract relevant data. Ensure you handle pagination if the data is large and account for any rate limits imposed by the API.
Step 4: Transform Data for ClickHouse
After extracting the data, transform it into a format suitable for ClickHouse. This could involve cleaning the data, converting data types, or restructuring the JSON objects into tabular format. Use Python's data handling libraries like `pandas` to facilitate this transformation.
Step 5: Prepare ClickHouse Database
Set up your ClickHouse database if you haven't already. Create a new table that matches the structure of your transformed data. Define appropriate data types for each column to optimize storage and query performance. Use the ClickHouse client tool or `clickhouse-driver` library to create tables.
Step 6: Load Data into ClickHouse
Use the `clickhouse-driver` Python library to insert the transformed data into ClickHouse. Establish a connection to your ClickHouse server, and execute SQL `INSERT` statements to load the data into the prepared table. Batch the data to improve insertion performance and handle any errors gracefully.
Step 7: Automate the Process
To keep the data updated, automate the extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) process. Use a scheduling tool like `cron` on Unix systems or Task Scheduler on Windows to run your Python script at regular intervals. Ensure your script is robust, with logging and error handling, to manage failures and retries.

This guide provides a straightforward approach to moving data from TVmaze to ClickHouse using custom scripts, ensuring you have full control over the process without relying on third-party tools.
