About Photoroom

Founded in 2019 by Matthieu Rouif and Eliot Andres, Photoroom is a Paris-based startup specializing in AI-driven photo editing technology. The company has rapidly become a major player in the generative AI space, particularly noted for its ability to remove and replace photo backgrounds seamlessly.

With over 200 million downloads and users across more than 180 countries, Photoroom has generated an impressive €50 million in annual recurring revenue as of November 2023. The app has been recognized as Apple's "Editor's Choice" and Google's "Best App," and powers creative workflows for major brands including Netflix, Warner Brothers, and Shopify.

Data-driven from the start, but scattered insights

Photoroom's co-founders built analytics into their culture from day one, but their data infrastructure hadn't kept pace with their explosive growth. While the company excelled at product analytics through Amplitude, financial and operational data remained siloed across dozens of tools.

"The two co-founders, they're super technical, both of them, and they're super data driven. So we've always had a very strong emphasis on data analytics," explained Juliette Duizabo, Head of Data at Photoroom. "However, the focus was primarily on product analytics. So everything was done in the app and analyzed through Amplitude."

Leadership realized they needed to improve their data infrastructure after their Series B fundraise in early 2024. When investors requested sophisticated financial reporting, the team found themselves manually consolidating data from multiple sources.

“When investors requested a financial report, at the time, Photoroom relied on data exports from RevenueCat and Stripe, which were then manually consolidated in Google Sheets” Juliette explained. While this approach worked initially, the company had grown beyond the limitations of pre-defined metrics and manual processes. To meet investor expectations for robust, consolidated reporting across tools like RevenueCat and Stripe, Photoroom needed full control over its data pipeline and transformation workflows.

Agency partnership accelerates data transformation

As expectations around data maturity increased, Photoroom recognized the need to strengthen its data infrastructure. At the time, with only one product data analyst, the team decided to bring in an external agency to accelerate the buildout. The agency laid the foundation of Photoroom’s modern data stack using Airbyte, prioritizing the company’s most critical need: financial reporting. They set up connections to key financial data sources including Stripe for payment processing, RevenueCat for subscription management, exchange rate APIs for international operations, and Adjust for marketing analytics.

"The reason they chose Airbyte was the versatility and customizability," Juliette noted. "All of our APIs either had a connector or Airbyte let them configure one easily.” When Juliette joined in May 2025 as the permanent Head of Data, she found a solid foundation already in place. A veteran Airbyte user from two previous companies, she immediately recognized the value of what had been built.

"I've been using Airbyte for a while at my previous two companies. I love it."

Why Airbyte was selected

Juliette's experience has made her a strong advocate for Airbyte's approach. At her previous company, she had established a clear decision framework. They preferred Airbyte to all other tools, and preferred to integrate new data sources with Airbyte whenever possible.

This preference stems from several key advantages:

Unmatched Versatility

"What I really like about Airbyte, for instance, versus Fivetran is twofold. Fivetran is very expensive, but beyond price, Airbyte provides versatility. You really can query any data if it has an API," Juliette explained. "Many, many tiny tools are absolutely not present in Fivetran, so you can never get this data out of them.” Airbyte provides the long-tail of data connectors and allows custom connections, giving it a huge advantage in versatility.

Lightning-Fast Implementation

The speed of deployment has been game-changing for Photoroom. "From configuration to loading data in the warehouse, the time is twenty minutes. It just gets done."

Dramatic Efficiency Gains

The transformation from their previous approach has been remarkable. "Before Airbyte, we just had Python scripts, which were written manually.” She quantified the improvement: "The time improvement is about 100x."

Enabling self-service analytics at scale

Photoroom's vision extends far beyond basic data integration. With a sprawling ecosystem of tools, they're building a centralized data platform that democratizes insights across the organization. "All of our intelligence is scattered across our many, many tools. We have at least 70 tools, potentially 300, and we need a way to centralize all of that information.” With dozens or even hundreds of tools, point-to-point integrations quickly become unmanageable.

Photoroom's solution centers everything on Snowflake, with Airbyte as the critical enabler. All data sources feed into the warehouse through Airbyte's connectors, transformations happen in one place, and then consistent data flows out to the reporting layer. This approach transforms complexity from exponential (N×N-1 connections) to linear (2N connections)—a critical difference for a scaling business, which will always have growing data sources and applications.

"We want to have one place where all the data goes. So the transformations are done in one place: a single source of truth. Then, everything gets consumed in one place for self service." Photoroom plans to scale their 15 connectors to 50-70 by the end of the year. This rapid scaling is possible because of Airbyte's efficiency.

Airbyte enables rapid scaling

As Photoroom continues its explosive growth trajectory, Airbyte provides the scalable data infrastructure essential for their next phase. The transformation from manual exports to automated pipelines and from siloed tools to a unified data platform is made possible because of Airbyte’s extensibility, speed, and reliability.

"We're not trying to optimize for cost. We're trying to optimize for impact," Juliette emphasized.

Now, Photoroom's lean data team can focus on what matters most. They can deliver insights that drive business decisions, enable self-service analytics across the organization, and continue innovating. Airbyte takes away the challenges of data movement to enable businesses to build products and deliver services to their customers.
