Summarize with AI:

A vector store is the storage and indexing layer that holds vector embeddings, numerical arrays that represent the semantic meaning of text, images, or other data, and retrieves them through similarity search.

In a RAG system, that makes retrieval semantic rather than keyword-only. In production, it also makes retrieval persistent and repeatable across multi-step workflows, so the system does not need to re-process the full corpus for every query. Without that indexed retrieval layer, systems either miss relevant context, rely too heavily on parametric memory, or become expensive and brittle as workloads grow.

TL;DR

A vector store stores and indexes embeddings so retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems can retrieve relevant context through similarity search.
In production, vector stores allow fast, repeated retrieval across multi-step agent workflows without re-processing the full corpus.
Vector stores can fail through stale embeddings, partial indexes, and permission drift, which silently degrade RAG behavior.
For AI agents, the right vector store needs hybrid search, incremental updates, metadata filtering, and permission-aware retrieval.

What Is a Vector Store?

A vector store holds vector embeddings and indexes them for similarity search. Each embedding is a fixed-dimension dense vector. In that space, geometric proximity reflects semantic relatedness, which makes distance-based retrieval meaningful.

A vector store serves the storage and retrieval layer of the system. The embedding model creates vectors, and the large language model (LLM) generates responses. The vector store accepts vectors, indexes them, and returns the most similar ones when queried.

At small scale, even in-memory arrays can serve this function. Production workloads usually need durable, indexed storage that survives restarts, handles concurrent queries, and supports updates without full rebuilds.

Embedding Ingestion into the Store

Raw documents are first chunked into segments sized for the embedding model's context window, then passed through the embedding model to produce vectors. Each vector is stored alongside metadata such as document ID, source system, timestamps, tenant identifiers, and other structured fields needed at query time. The vector then enters an approximate nearest neighbor (ANN) index, which organizes it for retrieval.

Query Retrieval Mechanics

At query time, the user's natural language question is passed through the same compatible embedding space used for stored vectors. The resulting query vector is submitted to the ANN index, which returns a ranked list of stored vectors with distance scores. The text payloads for the top-k results are fetched and assembled into the LLM's context window.

How Does a Vector Store Differ from a Vector Database and a Context Store?

A vector store is the indexing and retrieval subsystem. It stores embeddings and runs similarity search. A vector database wraps a vector store with database capabilities such as durability, fault tolerance, create, read, update, and delete operations, metadata filtering, scaling, and access control. A Context Store extends the scope further. It continuously syncs context across multiple source systems, lets agents reason across unified records, and provides governed, cross-system retrieval with freshness guarantees.

Many production RAG deployments use vector databases rather than raw vector stores. Enterprise agent deployments often need a broader context layer that includes vector storage as one capability among many.

Dimension	Vector Store	Vector Database	Context Store
Core function	Stores and indexes vector embeddings for similarity search	Full database system wrapping a vector store with querying, management, and operational capabilities	Continuously syncs context across sources into a unified, searchable layer
Persistence	In-memory or on-disk index; may be ephemeral	Durable storage with fault tolerance, authentication, and access control	Durable with continuous refresh across sources
Scope of data	Embeddings, typically standardized to a single embedding model per index or collection	Embeddings plus metadata, with CRUD operations and schema management	Structured records, unstructured files, and embeddings across multiple source systems
Query capability	ANN similarity search	Similarity search plus filtering, hybrid search, and metadata queries	Cross-system semantic search, entity lookup, and relationship traversal
Freshness mechanism	Typically requires external re-indexing or orchestration	Varies; some support incremental updates, and most require external orchestration	Refresh through continuous replication
Permission model	None native	Varies by system	Row-level and user-level ACLs inherited from source systems
Best fit for RAG	Prototyping and small-scale retrieval	Production RAG requiring durability, hybrid search, and operational tooling	Enterprise agents needing governed, cross-system context with freshness controls

Vector stores handle embedding retrieval, vector databases add operational database features, and Context Stores extend into sync, unification, and governed access.

Why Does Every RAG Pipeline Need a Vector Store?

A vector store gives retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) semantic retrieval that keyword matching alone cannot. Without a vector store, RAG falls back to keyword-only retrieval, which misses semantically relevant content that uses different terminology. Another path leaves the LLM to generate from parametric memory alone, its training data, and produce hallucinations when that knowledge is outdated or insufficient.

The inverse failure also matters. When users search for specific technical strings like error codes or function names, vector search may return documents about the general concept rather than the exact document that contains the specific string. Many teams therefore use hybrid retrieval, BM25 plus vector, rather than vector search alone.

For agents operating in enterprise environments, the vector store acts as a persistent retrieval memory layer. It allows multi-step reasoning across the same knowledge base without repeated preprocessing. Without persistent, indexed storage, each sub-query would require the system to re-embed the full document set. The vector store turns that repeated cost into a single upfront investment at index time, followed by retrieval at query time.

What Breaks When Vector Stores Fail in Production?

Vector stores can fail in ways that are hard to see in standard monitoring while still degrading system behavior. The main production failure modes are stale embeddings, incomplete indexes, and permission drift.

Stale Embeddings Degrade Retrieval

Vector similarity search has no native concept of time. A query embedding is compared against stored embeddings by distance, and that metric carries no information about when either embedding was generated or whether the source document has changed.

Consider a sales agent retrieving a pricing document. The embedding reflects a version from three months ago, but the pricing changed last week. The similarity score is high, yet the result is factually wrong, so the agent builds a proposal on the stale number.

Incomplete Indexes Create Silent Failures

Embedding pipelines are batch processes with failure points at every stage: document parsing, chunking, embedding application programming interface (API) calls, and upsert operations. When any stage fails mid-run, the result is a partially updated index. Some documents are current, some are stale, and some are missing entirely, with no indicator visible to the query layer.

Teams often attribute these symptoms to the LLM when the root cause is the storage layer serving an inconsistent state. In practice, the upstream data pipeline, sync frequency, and index completeness determine whether that failure reaches the vector store at all.

Permission Drift Exposes Restricted Content

When RAG systems convert documents into vectors, permissions do not automatically carry over unless access controls are explicitly propagated as metadata and enforced during retrieval. Content from source systems has its access controls stripped at the point of ingestion. Unless permissions are explicitly re-implemented as metadata filters at the vector store layer, they do not exist in the retrieval system.

When source-system permissions change, the embeddings in the vector store can retain their original access scope. In agentic systems, an early retrieval error can affect every subsequent step in a reasoning chain, and permission drift can surface restricted content that the agent then synthesizes across multiple steps or persists in memory across sessions.

Where regulated data is involved, teams also need infrastructure that supports compliance requirements such as SOC 2, HIPAA, and PCI DSS as part of the broader data access and governance model.

What Does Agentic RAG Demand from Vector Stores That Traditional RAG Does Not?

Agentic RAG places heavier demands on retrieval than traditional single-pass RAG. Traditional RAG follows a fixed pipeline: user query, embedding, vector store lookup, top-k results, then LLM generation. Agentic RAG replaces that fixed pipeline with a dynamic reasoning loop: plan, retrieve, evaluate, decide, and retrieve again.

That design raises query frequency above single-pass RAG. Multiple retrieval passes can add noticeable delay before LLM inference begins. Production agentic systems therefore need predictable p99 retrieval time, because one slow retrieval step blocks the reasoning chain.

Metadata filtering also changes. Many traditional RAG systems apply relatively static filters, such as tenant or source constraints. Agents construct metadata filters as part of their reasoning process, which makes metadata index design a central infrastructure concern.

Production traffic patterns also change. Many namespaces may each be small and infrequently queried, but expected to be immediately available when accessed. That differs from infrastructure built around one large corpus with few namespaces.

What Should You Look for When Choosing a Vector Store for AI Agents?

When choosing a vector store for agents, focus on retrieval behavior under production workloads rather than feature lists alone. Hybrid search matters because agents reformulate queries across reasoning steps. Some queries need keyword precision for exact identifiers, while others need semantic breadth for conceptual matching. Incremental update support matters because stale data can compound errors across multi-step chains. Permission enforcement matters because enterprise agents access data on behalf of users with different access levels, and namespace isolation alone does not constitute query-time access control list (ACL) enforcement.

Managed vector databases can reduce operational overhead but may limit deployment flexibility. Self-hosted options provide more control but require database administration expertise that AI engineers often lack. Teams with relatively small vector collections may not need a dedicated vector database at all, but agentic workloads can grow quickly once multiple enterprise sources feed the same store.

The criteria below map directly to those production pressures.

Selection Criterion	Why It Matters for Agents	What to Evaluate
Hybrid search	Agents reformulate queries across reasoning steps; some queries need keyword precision, others need semantic breadth	Native keyword and dense vector support without a separate search system
Incremental update support	Agents making decisions on stale data compound errors across multi-step reasoning chains	Ability to insert, update, and delete individual embeddings without full re-indexing
Metadata filtering at query time	Agents need to scope retrieval by source, date, entity, or permission group per reasoning step	Structured metadata fields with pre-filter and post-filter query support
Permission enforcement	Enterprise agents must respect source-system ACLs; namespace isolation alone is insufficient	Query-time ACL checks against user identity, not just metadata tags
Multi-tenancy	SaaS applications serve multiple customers whose data must never cross boundaries	Tenant-level data isolation with per-tenant query routing
Retrieval time under concurrent load	Agents may issue multiple retrieval calls per task; tail performance matters more than average	p99 benchmarks under concurrent query loads
Deployment flexibility	Enterprise security teams often require on-premises or VPC deployment	Self-hosted, cloud-managed, and hybrid deployment options
Operational overhead	AI engineers building agents should not become database administrators	Managed scaling, failure recovery, and monitoring without manual tuning

Workload shape, security requirements, and operating model together determine which of these criteria carry the most weight for a given team.

What Should You Build Around a Vector Store Next?

A vector store is necessary, but it is not the full data layer for AI agents. Production systems also need sync, freshness control, metadata extraction, and permission-aware delivery so retrieval quality does not depend on brittle custom plumbing.

Airbyte's agentic platform sits between enterprise source systems and vector stores as a data layer. It provides access to enterprise systems through agent connectors, while Airbyte's Context Store continuously replicates data so agents can reason across unified records from connected sources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use a relational database instead of a vector store for RAG?

Relational databases excel at exact-match queries and structured joins, but they are generally not designed for efficient similarity search across high-dimensional embeddings without specialized vector extensions or indexing approaches. PostgreSQL with vector support can work at small scale. Production RAG pipelines that serve agents usually need the hybrid search, metadata filtering, and concurrent query throughput of a dedicated vector database.

How often should you re-index a vector store?

Re-indexing frequency depends on how quickly source data changes and how sensitive the agent's task is to stale information. In practice, incremental re-indexing matters more than full rebuilds because it updates only changed embeddings and keeps costs lower. Teams should align refresh cadence with document volatility and access requirements.

What is the difference between a vector store and an embedding model?

An embedding model converts raw data, such as text, images, or structured records, into numerical vectors. A vector store holds those vectors and indexes them for similarity retrieval. If the embedding model changes, the store usually needs to be re-indexed.

Do vector stores handle permissions natively?

Most vector stores and vector databases do not enforce source-system permissions natively. Production deployments require an access control approach that attaches permission metadata during ingestion and enforces it during retrieval before retrieved content enters the agent's context.

When should you skip a vector store and use direct API calls instead?

Direct API calls make sense when the agent needs current data from a single source for a narrow, well-defined task. Vector stores make sense when the agent needs to reason across a large corpus or combine information from multiple sources. Many production systems use both, with direct agent integrations for live data access and vector retrieval for broader context.
