Sendgrid to Snowflake: How to Move Your Data

Move SendGrid into Snowflake with Airbyte. Why legacy Marketing Campaigns accounts fail, and what to do about missing message-level events.

Summarize with AI:

Moving SendGrid into Snowflake lets you set email programmes against what they produced. SendGrid reports on delivery and engagement and has never seen an order, a renewal or a support ticket, which is where the interesting questions actually live.

This guide covers the managed path with Airbyte. Two things shape the build: one kind of SendGrid account is not supported at all and fails with permission errors, and the data you get is audience and campaign level rather than per message.

Sendgrid to Snowflake at a glance:

Message-level eventsNot a streamThe messages stream was removed some versions ago

Why move data from Sendgrid to Snowflake?

Two situations account for most of these pipelines.

The first is attribution you control. SendGrid reports opens and clicks; whether a campaign produced customers who stayed needs revenue and retention data beside it, and that join can only happen where both datasets sit together under one set of controls.

The second is governed access to a contact list, which is a register of people's email addresses and deserves the controls a warehouse offers. If you mainly want to search message content or delivery logs, a search engine suits that shape better.

What do you need before you start?

Four things, and the first can end the project before it starts:

Confirmation of which Marketing Campaigns your account uses. Legacy Marketing Campaigns are not supported by this connector, and those accounts receive permission errors on marketing streams. The SendGrid source documentation is explicit about it.

An API key scoped to the streams you want. Marketing streams need the marketing read scope, and a dedicated read-only key is recommended over full access so you control exactly what Airbyte can reach.

Snowflake objects and a narrow grant. A warehouse, database, schema and a role that can create tables. Give this its own schema, because a contact list is not something to leave in a general reporting area.

Realistic expectations about message-level detail. Per-message events are not part of this connector, which changes which questions it can answer and is worth establishing before anybody designs a report.

If your Snowflake account restricts inbound traffic by IP, add the Airbyte Cloud IP addresses to the network policy before you begin.

How do you build a Sendgrid to Snowflake pipeline in Airbyte?

Step 1: Find out which Marketing Campaigns you are on

Ask whoever administers your SendGrid account whether it uses legacy Marketing Campaigns, because if it does, the marketing streams will not work and no amount of adjusting scopes will change that. Legacy uses different endpoints and a different permission model, and the connector targets the current API. Five minutes here avoids a day spent debugging permission errors that were never about permissions.

Step 2: Configure the SendGrid source

Click Sources in the left navigation, then New Source, and select SendGrid, following adding a source. Supply the API key and a start date, then select streams. If a stream returns a permission error, check its required scope against your key before assuming anything more complicated.

Step 3: Configure the Snowflake destination

Click Destinations, then New Destination, and select Snowflake, following adding a destination. Supply the account identifier, warehouse, database, schema and role. Contact records carry custom fields your marketing team defined, and Snowflake holds those nested structures natively.

Step 4: Create the connection and apply controls first

Click Connections, then New connection, select your streams and a sync mode. Daily suits email reporting. Then mask the identifying fields on contacts before telling anybody the schema exists, since most analysis counts recipients rather than reading them.

Then plan the join to your own send records, for the reason covered below.

Why do marketing streams return permission errors?

Usually because the account is on legacy Marketing Campaigns, which this connector does not support. Legacy uses different endpoints and a different scope entirely, so a key granted every permission SendGrid offers still cannot reach what the connector is asking for.

That produces a misleading failure. A permission error suggests a scope problem, so people regenerate keys, grant full access and try again, and the error persists because the request is going somewhere their account does not have. The documentation names this as a known cause and it is worth believing before investigating further.

Two related checks are worth making at the same time. Scopes genuinely are per stream, so a key that works for one stream may not work for another, and the marketing streams want the marketing read scope specifically. And some account plans simply do not include certain endpoints, so confirm your plan covers the features you are trying to sync rather than assuming the API is uniform.

What can you actually analyse?

Audiences and campaigns rather than individual messages. Contacts, lists, segments, single sends and the statistics around them describe who you email and how programmes performed in aggregate, which covers most marketing questions comfortably.

What is not here is the per-message event stream. A messages stream existed in earlier versions and was removed, so questions about whether a specific recipient opened a specific email at a specific time are outside this pipeline. Anybody arriving with a deliverability investigation in mind should hear that early.

That limitation is exactly what makes the warehouse join valuable. Your own application knows which messages it asked SendGrid to send and to whom, so pairing your send records with SendGrid's audience and campaign data reconstructs a good deal of what the missing stream would have given you. Design for that join rather than hoping a stream turns up.

Frequently asked questions

I get permission errors on marketing streams.

Most likely your account uses legacy Marketing Campaigns, which this connector does not support. Check that before regenerating keys or widening scopes.

Can I get per-message open and click events?

Not from this connector, since the messages stream was removed. Pair your own send records with the audience and campaign data instead.

Should I use a full access API key?

It is the simplest way to make every stream work and a dedicated read-only key is the better practice, since it controls exactly what Airbyte can reach.

A stream works for one account and not another.

Account plans differ in which endpoints they include, so confirm the plan covers the feature rather than assuming the API is the same everywhere.

Can I do this without writing code?

The pipeline, yes. Masking policies on contact details and the join to your own send records are SQL, and both are where the value is.

Get your Sendgrid data into Snowflake

Establish which Marketing Campaigns your account uses before anything else, because legacy accounts fail with errors that look like a scope problem and are not. Use a dedicated read-only key scoped per stream. Then accept that this is audience and campaign data rather than message events, mask the contact details, and design the join to your own send records that fills the gap.
