Chase Zieman

“Airbyte helped us accelerate our progress by years, compared to our competitors. We don’t need to worry about connectors and focus on creating value for our users instead of building infrastructure. That’s priceless. The time and energy saved allows us to disrupt and grow faster.”

Rupak Patel
"With Airbyte, we could just push a few buttons, allow API access, and bring all the data into Google BigQuery. By blending all the different marketing data sources, we can gain valuable insights."
How to Sync to Manually
Step 1: Export Data from PostHog
Begin by exporting the data from PostHog. You can do this by using the built-in data export feature. Navigate to the PostHog interface, go to the "Data" section, and select the data you want to export. Choose a format such as CSV or JSON, which are easy to process for further steps. Save the exported file locally.
Step 2: Set Up AWS Environment
Prepare your AWS environment to receive the data. This involves creating an AWS account if you haven't already, and configuring AWS CLI on your local machine. Use the command `aws configure` to set up your credentials and specify your default region.
Step 3: Create a DynamoDB Table
With AWS CLI or AWS Management Console, create a DynamoDB table where the data will be stored. Define the primary key and any necessary attributes. For example, use `aws dynamodb create-table` command with the appropriate parameters to define the structure of your table.
Step 4: Prepare Data for Import
Convert the exported data from PostHog into a format that DynamoDB can accept. This often means transforming CSV or JSON data into a series of JSON objects that conform to DynamoDB's data types. Write a script, likely in Python or Node.js, to iterate over your data and format each entry properly.
Step 5: Write a Data Ingestion Script
Develop a script to automate the data import process. Using AWS SDK for your chosen programming language (e.g., Boto3 for Python), write a script that reads the formatted data and uses `batch_write_item` or `put_item` to insert the data into DynamoDB. Make sure to handle any potential errors in the script.
Step 6: Execute the Data Transfer Script
Run your data ingestion script in your local environment or on an AWS service like Lambda if desired. Monitor the process for any errors or exceptions. Ensure that the data is being correctly transferred and inserted into the DynamoDB table by checking a few entries manually.
Step 7: Validate Data Integrity
After the data transfer is complete, perform a data integrity check to ensure all data was transferred accurately. This may involve running queries in DynamoDB to count entries, check data types, and verify that the data matches what was in PostHog. Adjust any discrepancies as necessary.
By following these steps, you can manually transfer data from PostHog to DynamoDB without relying on third-party connectors or integrations.
