Summarize with AI:

Most write-ups on agentic architecture start with the reasoning loop, but that is the layer least likely to decide whether an AI agent actually works in production. Reliability comes from the layers beneath: memory, tool access, coordination, and, above all, the data-provisioning layer that feeds the agent with fresh, unified context.

Treat agentic architecture as a stack of five pattern categories with real dependencies between them, and the tool choices stop looking interchangeable. This guide maps the whole stack, the tools serving each layer and why teams that skip the data layer keep shipping confident, wrong answers, no reasoning framework can rescue.

TL;DR

Agentic architecture is a stack of patterns for reasoning, memory, tool use, multi-agent coordination, and context/data provisioning.
Production reliability depends on the layers underneath the reasoning loop, especially the freshness and quality of the data feeding the agent.
Tools map to different layers, so orchestration, memory, and data-provisioning frameworks are not interchangeable.
Airbyte's agentic platform serves the context and data provisioning layer, unifying source systems in the Context Store and delivering to agents through multiple interfaces.

What Is Agentic Architecture?

Agentic architecture is the arrangement of patterns that govern how an agent reasons about a goal, maintains state, calls tools, coordinates with other agents, and obtains the context it needs to act. It is a stack, not a single pattern.

That distinction matters because reliability in production does not come from the reasoning loop alone. An agent with a strong planning pattern still returns incorrect answers if the data it is fed is stale, fragmented, or missing. When you evaluate an architecture, the useful question is not "which reasoning pattern" but "which layers do I actually need and how do they depend on each other?"

The rest of the stack breaks into five pattern categories. Each governs one structural decision, and each fails predictably when skipped.

What Are the Core Patterns of Agentic Architecture?

Five pattern categories cover the structural decisions behind almost every production agent. The table below names each layer, its canonical patterns, and the specific failure mode you see when it is ignored.

Pattern Category	What It Governs	Canonical Patterns	Failure When Ignored
Planning and reasoning	How an agent breaks a goal into steps and adapts	ReAct, plan-and-execute, reflection loops	Agent loops without converging or skips required steps
Memory and state	What the agent remembers within and across sessions	Short-term/session memory, long-term/persistent memory	Agent repeats work or loses context mid-task
Tool use and function calling	How the agent invokes external capabilities	Function calling, tool routing, tool selection	Tool overload: the agent cannot pick the right function
Multi-agent coordination	How multiple agents divide and hand off work	Orchestrator-worker, hierarchical, peer-to-peer/swarm	Coordination overhead exceeds the value of specialization
Context and data provisioning	How does business data reach the agent fresh and governed	RAG, structured retrieval, fresh data grounding	Agent assembles fragmented data at runtime and returns stale answers

These categories differ in visibility but not in importance. Reasoning gets written about most; context and data provisioning get engineered least, which is why so many production agents fail in the same predictable way. The interdependencies between layers make the tool landscape confusing: a framework that looks powerful in one layer cannot compensate for a broken layer below it.

What Are the Top Tools by Architecture Pattern?

The tool landscape maps directly onto the five categories, with a distinct set of leaders per layer. The table below lists representative tools and, importantly, what each one still depends on to actually work.

Pattern Category	Representative Tools	What They Handle	What They Depend On
Planning and reasoning	LangGraph, CrewAI, LlamaIndex, AutoGen, OpenAI Agents SDK, Pydantic AI	Reasoning loops, graph state machines and role-based execution	Context supplied from another layer
Memory and state	Semantic Kernel, Kernel Memory, memory-layer tools	Episodic, semantic, and procedural memory	Retrieval from a data source underneath
Tool use and function calling	MCP servers, workflow automation, framework-native function calling	Tool routing, auth, execution across many APIs	The quality of data behind each tool
Multi-agent coordination	LangGraph (Send API, supervisor-worker), CrewAI	Handoffs, parallel fan-out/fan-in, hierarchical delegation	Shared, consistent context across agents
Context and data provisioning	Airbyte's agentic platform, vector stores, context layers	Live, governed data from sources into a unified layer	Upstream extraction and integration

The pattern in that last column is worth naming. Every layer depends on something beneath it, and eventually every dependency chain ends at the data that feeds the whole stack. That is why tools serving the context layer are not swappable with orchestration or memory frameworks; they solve a different problem, and everything above them inherits whatever the data layer delivers.

How Do the Patterns Fit Together as a Stack?

Architecture is a dependency chain, not a menu. Reasoning quality is capped by memory. Memory is capped by retrieval. Retrieval is capped by the data layer feeding it. You can pick the strongest reasoning framework on the market and still ship an agent that confidently returns incorrect answers if the underlying layer is broken.

Here is the specific failure this prevents. Without a data layer, such as Airbyte’s Context Store, an agent assembles context at query time. It makes five or six sequential API calls across disconnected systems, waits on each one, burns tokens parsing raw payloads it mostly discards, and tries to reconcile fragmented records live. By the time it answers, the data is stale, and the token bill is high. This is the runtime-assembly problem, where production agents actually break.

Upstream context preparation removes that failure. The work of unifying data across systems is done in advance, so the agent queries a prepared layer instead of chasing live APIs. That collapses sequential calls, reduces token consumption, and provides the agent with agent-ready data that is already fresh and unified. The layers above inherit whatever quality this layer provides, which is why it is not optional.

How Do You Choose an Architecture for Your Use Case?

Three axes cover most of the decision, and treating them in order keeps the choice honest. Each one narrows the design space before you commit to a specific framework or provider.

Single-agent vs. multi-agent. Start single-agent. Only add agents when the task genuinely requires specialized roles that span multiple context windows.
Latency and cost. Reflection loops and multi-agent coordination burn more tokens and time; weigh output quality against the speed you give up.
Governance and data requirements. Cross-system reasoning across different schemas and permissions pushes you toward a pre-materialized data layer rather than runtime API proxying.

Governance is the axis most decision trees skip, and it is a first-order decision. To pick the right access path, use the access path selection guide; SaaS integration patterns cover the infrastructure tradeoffs. Working through these three axes surfaces where the data layer has to sit, and how much of the stack you actually need to build yourself versus adopt.

How Does Airbyte's agentic platform Fit Into Agentic Architecture?

Airbyte's agentic platform serves the context and data provisioning category as the context layer for AI agents. It connects agents to the SaaS tools an organization runs on, unifies that data into one searchable layer called the Context Store, and lets agents read, search, and write across every connected system.

Delivery happens through five interfaces: a web app, the hosted Agent MCP (compatible with Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code, and Windsurf), the Agent SDK, the Agent CLI, and an API.

Two-mode execution, search over the prepared index and Direct for live calls, gives agents the right access path per query. Airbyte's agentic platform sits beneath the reasoning and orchestration frameworks rather than replacing them, keeping the model and framework choices above it swappable as the ecosystem shifts.

Ready To Engineer the Layer Below the Reasoning Loop?

Agent reliability is set three layers below where most teams look. Reasoning, memory, and coordination inherit the quality of the context that feeds them, and no sophistication in reasoning rescues an agent starved of fresh, unified data. Once you see agentic architecture as a dependency chain, the data-provisioning layer stops being an implementation detail and becomes the design decision that determines outcomes.

Airbyte's agentic platform is built to be that layer. It provides the Context Store as a unified searchable index, agent connectors across your source systems, two-mode execution with Search and Direct, managed auth across every source, and delivery through a web app, the Agent MCP, the Agent SDK, and an API, all sharing the same Context Store underneath, so the model and framework above stay free to change.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Should I Sequence Investment Across the Five Layers?

Invest first where your current bottleneck lives. For most teams past the demo stage, that is context and data provisioning, because reasoning frameworks are mature and the data feeding them is not. Memory and coordination usually come later, once a single agent reliably handles one workflow end-to-end.

Does Serverless or Managed Inference Change the Architecture?

Not materially. Managed inference removes hosting overhead but does not touch the memory, tool, or data layers. The stack looks identical; only the operational surface underneath the model shrinks.

How Do I Test Whether the Data Layer Is My Real Bottleneck?

Log the number of upstream tool calls per agent turn and the token count of the payloads returned. If you see five-plus sequential calls and most tokens getting discarded during reconciliation, the runtime-assembly problem is active and a pre-materialized context layer will move the needle more than a better model will.

Where Does Evaluation Fit in Agentic Architecture?

Evaluation is a cross-cutting concern that touches every layer, not a sixth pattern. Trace-based evaluation captures reasoning quality; retrieval evaluation captures data-layer quality. Skipping the latter is why teams routinely misdiagnose data problems as model problems and swap frameworks when they should be fixing pipelines.
