Three Anti-Patterns From Applying Human Auth to Agents

Borrowed sessions happen when an agent receives a user's access token and forwards it unmodified to a downstream application programming interface (API). Two trust boundaries collapse into one. The downstream API sees the user's full identity and permissions, and the agent becomes invisible in the audit trail.

Shared service accounts create a single point of failure. When multiple agents share one service account or API key, compromise of one agent compromises all. Audit logs also become much less useful because every action is attributed to the same identity.

How Do You Implement Agent Authentication?

Implement agent authentication by registering the agent as its own identity, choosing the right OAuth flow for each connection, handling token lifecycle per platform, and logging both agent and user identity across calls. Each step applies per connected platform, because every connection brings its own client registration, token behavior, and audit requirements.

Step 1: Register the Agent as Its Own Identity

Create a dedicated client registration or service principal for each platform the agent connects to. Do not reuse human user credentials or share registrations across agents. Step 3: Build Token Lifecycle Handling

Log agent identity, delegating user, accessed resource, and action taken for every relevant event. This logging has to span all connected platforms so teams can reconstruct who acted, through which agent, and against which system. When an agent calls an API on a user's behalf using typical identity and access management (IAM) configurations, that call can appear as the user rather than the agent. That gap matters for auditability.
