Summarize with AI:

An API gateway is a single entry point that sits between clients and backend services, handling routing, authentication, rate limiting, caching, and observability for API traffic. It gives operators one place to govern north-south traffic instead of duplicating the same logic across services.

But a gateway can only govern traffic at the edge. It can enforce network-level policy and verify endpoint access, yet it cannot by itself determine whether the records returned beneath the edge are appropriate for the identity behind an agent request. For AI-agent systems, governance still has to continue beneath the gateway.

TL;DR

API gateways centralize routing, authentication, rate limiting, caching, and observability for API traffic.
They differ from reverse proxies, load balancers, and service meshes by governing API traffic at the north-south boundary.
Common gateway patterns trade centralization benefits for some combination of latency, operational overhead, or organizational bottlenecks.
AI workloads are contributing to AI and agent gateways, and data-level governance still sits beneath the gateway.

What Does an API Gateway Do?

An API gateway consolidates six cross-cutting concerns that would otherwise be duplicated across backend services.

Capability	What It Does	Why It Matters
Request routing	Directs requests to backend services by path, header, or method	Clients use a single endpoint instead of tracking service addresses
Authentication and authorization	Verifies caller identity and checks permissions before forwarding	Security logic centralized rather than duplicated per service
Rate limiting and throttling	Controls requests per caller within a time window	Prevents abuse and protects backends; a security control
Protocol translation	Converts between REST, gRPC, GraphQL, SOAP, WebSocket	Backend services use the protocols that fit them without forcing clients to adapt
Caching	Stores frequent responses to serve from cache instead of hitting backends	Reduces backend load for repeated queries
Observability (logging, metrics, tracing)	Centralizes request logging, latency metrics, distributed tracing	Single observation point for all traffic; structural benefit of centralization

These functions matter because they remove repeated edge logic from backend services. Teams get one policy enforcement layer instead of rebuilding the same controls service by service.

Traffic Management and Routing

The gateway inspects each incoming request's HTTP method, URI path, headers, and query parameters, then applies matching rules to forward the request to the correct upstream service. It can also handle service discovery, load distribution, and request aggregation. In some cases, the gateway combines multiple downstream calls into a single response.

Security Enforcement at the Gateway Layer

Authentication and authorization happen before any upstream service receives the request. The gateway extracts credentials, such as a Bearer token, API key, or mutual Transport Layer Security (TLS) certificate, validates them, and either forwards identity context or returns a 401 or 403. That blocks broken auth at the edge instead of letting invalid requests propagate deeper into the system.

Observability as a Structural Benefit

Because every request passes through the gateway, it becomes the natural emission point for metrics, structured access logs, and distributed trace spans. Operators get a single observation point across traffic without instrumentation changes in upstream services.

How Does an API Gateway Differ from a Reverse Proxy, Load Balancer, or Service Mesh?

Several infrastructure components handle overlapping but distinct traffic management responsibilities. The differences matter because they operate at different layers and solve different problems.

Component	Primary Function	Traffic Direction	Scope
Load balancer	Distributes traffic across server instances	Horizontal distribution	Infrastructure
Reverse proxy	Forwards requests; handles caching, TLS	North-south (client → server)	Application
API gateway	Governs API traffic: auth, routing, observability	North-south (client → services)	API / Service
Service mesh	Manages service-to-service communication via sidecars	East-west (service → service)	Internal network
API management platform	Full API lifecycle: design, publish, govern, analyze	All	Program

North-south traffic flows between external clients and internal services across the network perimeter. East-west traffic flows between services inside the cluster. An API gateway handles the north-south boundary, while a service mesh handles east-west communication through sidecar proxies that run alongside each service instance.

The distinction is operational, not just conceptual. The same proxy technology can serve both roles, but the role still changes with traffic direction and policy scope.

What Are Common API Gateway Architecture Patterns?

Common API gateway architecture patterns balance centralization against team autonomy. Each pattern introduces a different operational or organizational downside.

Centralized Gateway

A centralized gateway uses a single gateway instance or high-availability cluster as the sole entry point for all clients and backend services. The main downside is concentration of risk: backend services can be fully healthy while users still experience a complete outage because all reachability depends on the gateway tier. The gateway team can also become an organizational bottleneck when every policy or routing change flows through one place.

Backend for Frontend Pattern

The Backend for Frontend (BFF) pattern gives each client type, such as mobile, web, or third-party, its own dedicated backend with a tailored API. The downside is that code duplication scales with client types, especially when multiple BFFs perform similar aggregation and graceful-degradation logic. Teams often respond by moving that shared logic back into a general-purpose edge API, which recreates the bloat the pattern was meant to avoid.

Per-Team Dedicated Gateway

A per-team gateway gives each engineering team its own gateway instance, aligned with its domain or service boundary. The downside is policy drift at team boundaries. Teams make independent decisions on authentication schemes, TLS settings, rate limiting, and logging standards, while operational overhead scales with team count.

Sidecar Gateway

A sidecar gateway runs a proxy as a sidecar container alongside every service instance, forming the data plane of a service mesh. The downside is added latency and resource consumption because every service-to-service call traverses two proxy hops, sender-side and receiver-side, while each sidecar consumes resources unconditionally. That tradeoff is acceptable in some environments, but it is still a tradeoff.

These patterns show the same theme: centralization improves control, but it can also concentrate failure, cost, or coordination overhead.

How Does an API Gateway Handle Security?

Gateways centralize three security functions: authentication and authorization, rate limiting, and input validation. JSON Web Token (JWT) validation at the gateway checks claims including issuer, audience, expiration, and scope before forwarding. If any check fails, the request never reaches the backend.

Rate limiting is both a security control and a traffic management feature. Request-count throttling alone is not always enough, because resource consumption can increase through response volume rather than raw request frequency. Effective controls therefore have to consider more than requests per second.

The gateway still has limits. Token validation confirms identity, but it does not detect all abuse by legitimate callers, and it does not decide whether returned records are appropriate for the delegated identity behind an agent request.

How Are API Gateways Evolving for AI Agents?

API gateways are evolving into AI and agent gateways because model and agent traffic require controls that traditional request-based gateways do not provide. The shift is less about replacing the gateway and more about adding controls for traffic that behaves differently from conventional API calls.

Layer	What It Handles	Key Capabilities	Traffic Type
Traditional API gateway	Conventional REST/gRPC/GraphQL traffic between clients and microservices	Routing, auth, request-based rate limiting, caching, load balancing, TLS termination	HTTP-based API calls
AI / Large Language Model (LLM) gateway	Traffic between applications and AI models	Token-based rate limiting, semantic caching, model routing/failover, prompt inspection, personally identifiable information (PII) filtering, cost management	Model inference calls
Agent gateway	Traffic between AI agents and enterprise systems, and between agents	Agent identity/auth, per-agent cost attribution, Model Context Protocol (MCP) tool-call governance, agent-to-agent communication management, behavioral monitoring	Agent tool calls, agent-to-agent negotiation

This separation matters because a request is no longer a stable unit of work. Model inference cost and behavior vary with input size, model choice, output length, and agent behavior across multiple downstream calls.

From Request-Based to Token-Based Traffic Management

AI workloads push gateways from request-based controls toward token-based controls because request count no longer tracks cost well. A short prompt to a small model and a large prompt to a large model may both look like one HTTP request while imposing very different backend cost. Infrastructure that acts on tokens therefore has to count tokens or consume token counts emitted by the model server.

AI and LLM gateways also introduce semantic caching, which matches prompts by embedding similarity rather than exact string match. That can improve cache hit rates across similar prompts, but it also introduces the risk of false positives if the similarity threshold is too loose.

Agent Identity Replaces User Identity

Agent traffic introduces identity requirements that differ from traditional user sessions. AI agents often authenticate using delegated user identities rather than exclusively authenticating as workloads, and they do not have sessions, passwords, or multi-factor authentication. They need cryptographically attested process identity with rotation.

Agents can also generate multiple downstream API calls from a single user interaction through an iterative reasoning-action-observation loop. Per-agent identity tracking at the gateway layer allows cost attribution, behavioral monitoring, and blame assignment across multi-agent workflows.

What Breaks Beneath the Gateway?

The gateway can verify endpoint access, but data-level governance still has to happen beneath it. A gateway can verify that an agent is authorized to call an endpoint, yet it cannot verify on its own whether the records returned by that endpoint are appropriate for the identity on whose behalf the agent is acting.

This is where production failures appear. An agent can have valid endpoint access and still retrieve the wrong records because permissions are too broad, delegated credentials have expired, or cross-system entity mapping is inconsistent. In practice, stale or mismatched data, broken auth on downstream tool calls, and missing row-level restrictions are problems the gateway alone does not solve.

How Does Airbyte's agentic platform Fit into the Gateway Architecture?

Airbyte's agentic platform operates as the data infrastructure layer beneath the gateway. It handles the last mile from tool call to governed data query. It provides 50+ agent connectors, built on Airbyte's broader ecosystem of 700+ replication connectors, with Managed Auth and credential refresh.

Row-level and user-level access controls filter data before it enters the agent's context window, so the gateway does not need to re-implement data-level permissions. That division of responsibility matters: the gateway governs traffic, while the layer beneath it determines whether an agent receives governed, auditable data access.

What Should AI Engineers Conclude About API Gateways?

AI engineers should treat the gateway as the network-level policy layer, not as the complete control plane for production agent systems. A gateway can route, authenticate, rate-limit, and observe traffic, but it cannot by itself resolve stale or mismatched data, validate row-level permissions in downstream systems, or fix delegated credentials that fail beneath the edge. For production agent systems, the architectural question is not just which gateway to run, but how governed data access works underneath it.

Airbyte's agentic platform fits into that layer beneath the gateway. It handles the last mile from tool call to governed data query so agents can access enterprise systems under row-level and user-level access controls rather than relying on gateway policy alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an API gateway the same as an AI gateway?

No. A traditional API gateway manages HTTP-based API traffic for conventional applications. An AI gateway is a specialized layer for model inference traffic with token-based rate limiting, semantic caching, and prompt inspection.

Do AI agents need a different kind of gateway?

Yes. An emerging agent gateway layer handles agent-specific concerns including MCP protocol awareness, per-agent cost attribution, and agent-to-agent communication governance. Traditional gateways still matter, but they do not cover the full behavior of multi-step agent tool use.

What is the difference between an API gateway and an API management platform?

An API gateway is a runtime proxy handling request routing, auth, and rate limiting. An API management platform covers the full API lifecycle such as design, publishing, developer portals, monetization, and governance. In short, the gateway is one runtime component, while the management platform covers the broader program.

Can you run an API gateway and a service mesh at the same time?

Yes. The API gateway handles north-south traffic, while the service mesh handles east-west traffic. These roles are complementary rather than mutually exclusive, so many architectures use both because they govern different boundaries.

What happens when the API gateway goes down?

In a centralized pattern, downtime at the gateway tier can block access to the entire system even if backend services are healthy. That is why centralized control always has to be weighed against concentrated failure risk. High availability reduces the risk, but it does not remove the dependency on the gateway tier.
