Sidecar Gateway

A sidecar gateway runs a proxy as a sidecar container alongside every service instance, forming the data plane of a service mesh. The downside is added latency and resource consumption because every service-to-service call traverses two proxy hops, sender-side and receiver-side, while each sidecar consumes resources unconditionally. That tradeoff is acceptable in some environments, but it is still a tradeoff.

How Does an API Gateway Handle Security?

Gateways centralize three security functions: authentication and authorization, rate limiting, and input validation. JSON Web Token (JWT) validation at the gateway checks claims including issuer, audience, expiration, and scope before forwarding. If any check fails, the request never reaches the backend.

Rate limiting is both a security control and a traffic management feature. Request-count throttling alone is not always enough, because resource consumption can increase through response volume rather than raw request frequency. Effective controls therefore have to consider more than requests per second.

The gateway still has limits. Token validation confirms identity, but it does not detect all abuse by legitimate callers, and it does not decide whether returned records are appropriate for the delegated identity behind an agent request.

This separation matters because a request is no longer a stable unit of work. Model inference cost and behavior vary with input size, model choice, output length, and agent behavior across multiple downstream calls.

AI workloads push gateways from request-based controls toward token-based controls because request count no longer tracks cost well. A short prompt to a small model and a large prompt to a large model may both look like one HTTP request while imposing very different backend cost. Infrastructure that acts on tokens therefore has to count tokens or consume token counts emitted by the model server.

AI and LLM gateways also introduce semantic caching, which matches prompts by embedding similarity rather than exact string match. That can improve cache hit rates across similar prompts, but it also introduces the risk of false positives if the similarity threshold is too loose.

Agent traffic introduces identity requirements that differ from traditional user sessions. AI agents often authenticate using delegated user identities rather than exclusively authenticating as workloads, and they do not have sessions, passwords, or multi-factor authentication. They need cryptographically attested process identity with rotation.
