What Is MCP Authentication?

MCP authentication is the process an MCP server uses to decide whether a client may invoke a tool for a user or workload. It matters because agent access is delegated and operational: a successful login is not enough if later tool calls can exceed the user's intended permissions. The control point has to follow the agent from sign-in through each tool call.

How Does the MCP Specification Define Authentication?

The MCP specification defines authentication for HTTP-based remote MCP around OAuth-based authorization, with the MCP server acting as the protected resource. The most important production detail is the boundary between a server that validates tokens and an authorization server that issues them.

The June 2025 stable spec makes the resource-server model explicit by classifying MCP servers as resource servers only, never authorization servers. They validate tokens for protected resources and do not issue tokens. It also uses OAuth 2.1-based requirements with PKCE for HTTP-based remote authorization.

Resource Indicators do the most protective work in that table. The client states the intended audience of the token, so the authorization server issues a token valid only for that one MCP server. As a result, a compromised server cannot replay a token it received against a different resource.

When Should AI Agents Use OAuth vs API Keys?

Start with one question: does the agent act on behalf of a specific user? If yes, you need OAuth's delegation model, because an API key is a static credential string; API authentication with static keys carries no user identity, no expiry, and no native revocation. Whoever holds the string holds the access.

This table depends on what the upstream service offers because the external API often determines the flow. Teams still need to choose how they handle refresh tokens. Those credentials keep a grant usable across refresh cycles. No standard solves multi-hop delegation in agent chains. RFC 8693 token exchange covers one hop (human to agent to service), and nothing standard covers the hop after that.

What Happens When One Agent Connects to Many Systems?

An agent that needs Salesforce, HubSpot, Zendesk, Slack, and GitHub needs five OAuth apps, five refresh cycles, and five scope sets. Multiply by users: fifty people delegating to that agent means 250 live credential relationships, each with its own expiry, scope drift, and revocation path.

Token refreshes become harder as connection counts rise. Waiting for a 401 and refreshing reactively works for one connection, but across five sources and many concurrent agent runs, it becomes brittle unless refresh is proactive and coordinated. A central service must track token expiry across every connection.

Enterprise identity data shows how far this has already run ahead of governance. Non-human identities outnumber human accounts about 45:1 in the average enterprise, and organizations have never rotated most of them. Two patterns keep this sprawl manageable. Teams usually handle credential sprawl with either a token vault per source or a unified layer. Pre-materialized context reduces the load on either approach. When an agent queries an indexed context layer rather than live APIs for every question, agents exercise live credentials less often. That reduces the window in which a leaked token matters. Freshness becomes another risk: an agent can answer from stale CRM data if indexed context is not refreshed after permission, ownership, or record changes.

Cross-system reasoning also strains the token window when the agent pulls raw records from several SaaS APIs into one prompt instead of querying pre-materialized context. The business effect is practical: fewer expired-token failures, lower audit effort, and lower API and token usage when agents avoid unnecessary live reads.

What Are the MCP Authentication Security Risks?

MCP authentication risks fall into two categories: exploitable flaws that researchers have already found in auth handling, and structural risks that follow from how MCP servers hold tokens in the first place. The main risks include:

OAuth impersonation and command injection. The Cursor CVE-2025-61591 report described attackers impersonating malicious MCP servers to inject crafted commands via OAuth, with potential remote code execution using user privileges. Separate command-injection flaws have also been documented.
Confused-deputy behavior. When a server holds tokens without enforcing per-request authorization validation, confused-deputy behavior becomes a predictable consequence of the architecture rather than an edge case.
Token passthrough. When a server forwards the client's token to an upstream API, the upstream can no longer identify the actual caller. The spec forbids this outright, since attribution and audit collapse along with caller identity.

Formal taxonomies point in the same direction: MCP-38 enumerates 38 threat categories for MCP deployments, and MCPSecBench catalogs 17 attack types across four attack surfaces. Both suggest teams need to treat scoping and auditing as first-order controls, defining which scopes each token can use and logging which agent read or changed which entity.

How Should Teams Govern Agent Credentials in Production?

Teams often overlook read auditing because gateways and vaults log actions, such as which tool sent an email or which record got updated. Read activity can cover more data than action logs show. A broad request such as “a summary of key accounts” can trigger queries against every Salesforce record the user can access. The agent may read far more than a curated list. Teams need agent access control that records which entities an agent read, in what context, and whether the read matched the user's intent. Credential lifecycle for departed users creates asecond problem. When an administrator deprovisions the delegating user from Salesforce or Slack, their agent tokens can outlive them if teams do not revoke grants, and off-boarding runbooks that revoke human sessions may miss agent grants.

Governing credentials in production works best as a staged rollout rather than a one-time setup, with different checks at different points in the agent's lifecycle. Teams should:
