Summarize with AI:

Teams evaluating Mixture-of-Agents (MoA) frameworks usually obsess over orchestration patterns and coordination models. That focus is misplaced. The framework determines how agents communicate, but it does not determine whether they can access your business data; the second question is what actually breaks production deployments.

Most tools marketed under the "MoA" label are general orchestration frameworks, not implementations of the layered proposer-aggregator pattern Wang et al. defined. They share one underlying unsolved problem: how does each agent obtain up-to-date, governed business data at runtime?

TL;DR

Mixture-of-Agents (MoA) is a specific layered proposer-and-aggregator architecture, distinct from generic multi-agent orchestration.
LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen, LlamaIndex, the OpenAI Agents SDK, and Together AI MoA coordinate agents through different control models.
Production success depends less on the choice of orchestration and more on governed, cross-system data access at runtime.
Airbyte's agentic platform work alongside these frameworks as a context layer for unified business data.

What Is a Mixture-of-Agents Architecture?

Mixture-of-Agents is a layered inference-time architecture in which multiple LLM proposers independently generate candidate responses to the same query, and an aggregator synthesizes them into a final answer. Layers can stack, so later aggregators refine earlier outputs. The canonical definition comes from Wang et al. in the paper "Mixture-of-Agents Enhances Large Language Model Capabilities".

The defining characteristics:

Layered structure: a reference four-layer configuration with three proposer agents per layer, each agent using prior-layer outputs as auxiliary input.
Generative aggregation: the aggregator synthesizes proposer outputs rather than picking the best one, which is what separates MoA from ranker baselines.
Quality gains: open-source MoA reaches 65.1% on AlpacaEval 2.0, compared to GPT-4o's 57.5%, roughly a 7.6-point improvement.
Latency cost: a latency multiplier of approximately 4.07x, or 2.24x with parallel inference, because every layer waits on the full output of the prior one.
Compute cost: average cost per query rises from roughly $0.009 at one aggregation layer to $0.032 at two, a 3.7x increase.
Role split: first-layer proposers see only the query, intermediate agents both aggregate and propose, and a final aggregator produces the answer.

Those properties make MoA an inference-time technique for raising answer quality rather than a framework for coordinating work across systems. That distinction matters when comparing it to general multi-agent orchestration.

How Does MoA Differ From Multi-Agent Orchestration?

The MoA label is often stretched to encompass any system with multiple agents, obscuring real architectural differences. MoA is inference-time ensembling for answer quality; multi-agent orchestration is task decomposition across specialist agents. Conflating the two leads teams to pick the wrong tool for the job and to misread benchmarks that measure different things.

The differences sit in four places. MoA's core unit is a layer of proposers feeding into an aggregator, while the orchestration unit is a specialist agent (planner, retriever, executor) coordinating with others. MoA aims to produce one higher-quality answer through synthesis; orchestration aims to complete a multi-step task through routing and handoff. MoA proposers stay isolated from each other by design, while orchestration agents typically share state or messages. And MoA does not address data access at all, while orchestration frameworks delegate it to retrieval tools or leave it to the builder.

Dimension	Mixture-of-Agents (MoA)	Generic multi-agent orchestration
Core unit	Proposer and aggregator layers	Specialist agents (planner, retriever, executor)
Primary goal	Higher-quality single output via synthesis	Completing a multi-step task across roles
Defining mechanism	Generative aggregation, not selection	Task routing and handoff
Origin	Wang et al., arXiv:2406.04692 (ICLR 2025)	Framework ecosystems (LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen)
Data access	Not addressed	Delegated to the retrieval tools or the builder

There is a useful caveat. The Self-MoA finding shows that aggregating multiple outputs from a single strong model can outperform mixing different models, achieving a 6.6% gain over standard MoA on AlpacaEval 2.0. Proposer quality matters more than proposer diversity, which means the multi-vendor stack often is not worth its operational overhead.

With the architectural difference settled, the practical question becomes which orchestration framework fits which workflow.

Which Frameworks Should You Evaluate?

The frameworks below cover most production agent work today. Each one ends its responsibility at a different point in the data path, and that boundary is usually where deployments hit friction.

LangGraph

LangGraph models agents as nodes in a directed graph that share state through reducers. It provides low-level control over flow, human-in-the-loop gates, and durable memory via checkpoints and a cross-thread store. Its MCP integration through langchain-mcp-adapters provides a documented path for wiring external tools, with a MultiServerMCPClient returning a unified tool list. LangGraph's safety model covers the state inside the graph; cross-system business data still has to be entered from an external context layer, such as Airbyte’s Context Store.

CrewAI

CrewAI organizes agents into role-based crews that run sequentially or under a manager agent, with 53.5k GitHub stars and fast prototyping for role-defined teams. Delegation can get fragile in long hierarchical runs. CrewAI ships database tools for single systems like MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Snowflake, but cross-crew context across business systems still needs external infrastructure.

AutoGen / AG2

AutoGen frames coordination as conversations, with group-chat patterns in which agents publish to a shared thread, a setup that suits agent debate and code-writing loops. AutoGen Studio gives a no-code prototyping surface. Its ContextVariables store is flat and globally shared with no native namespace isolation, and the framework has no native cross-system data layer.

LlamaIndex

LlamaIndex uses an event-driven architecture in which steps subscribe to events. It is the one framework in which ingestion, parsing, indexing, and retrieval are first-class primitives rather than plug-in tools. That makes it the default reach for document-heavy work, and teams often pair it with a second framework for broader orchestration.

OpenAI Agents SDK

The OpenAI Agents SDK uses a handoff model in which control transfers between agents via tool calls, with built-in guardrails and full streaming. Its only native memory primitive is the session, which holds conversation history. The SDK calls tools per source at runtime and has no unified business data layer.

Together AI MoA

Together AI MoA is the inference-layer entry and a technique, not an orchestration framework. It sends a prompt to multiple open-source models in parallel, then a final model synthesizes the responses. Its materials do not describe built-in enterprise data-access capabilities.

A pattern runs across every framework except LlamaIndex: they coordinate reasoning among agents and assume that context arrives pre-assembled from elsewhere. None of the frameworks above sources data from cross-system business stores, which is why framework choice alone rarely determines whether a deployment ships.

Framework Comparison at a Glance

A side-by-side helps when you are shortlisting. The table summarizes the coordination model, the ideal workflow, and where each framework's responsibility for data stops.

Framework	Coordination model	Best fit	Where its data layer ends
LangGraph	Graph-based, stateful	Multi-step decision engines	MCP path; external context layer needed
CrewAI	Role-based crew	Role-based prototypes, research	Single-system integrations only
AutoGen / AG2	Conversation / message-passing	Agent debate, code-writing loops	No native cross-system data layer
LlamaIndex	Retrieval-centric	Document-driven and knowledge-based agents	Strong retrieval; needs governed cross-system layer
OpenAI Agents SDK	Handoff model	OpenAI-native tool-using agents	Tool calls per source at runtime
Together AI MoA	Layered proposer/aggregator	Boosting answer quality	Inference-layer only

The table clarifies a deeper truth: coordination models differ widely, but data-layer boundaries cluster in the same place. That convergence is what makes matching a framework to a specific workflow the practical next step.

How Do You Match a Framework to a Specialized Workflow?

Start from the workflow's bottleneck. The right framework follows from the constraint that hurts most in your specific build: retrieval quality, flow control, prototyping speed, code loops, or stack alignment.

Retrieval-heavy work: pick LlamaIndex when the agent's primary job is to find and synthesize information across documents or knowledge bases.
Complex flow control: pick LangGraph when you need precise graph-based routing, human-in-the-loop gates, and durable state across long runs.
Fast role-based prototyping: pick CrewAI when team velocity matters more than fine-grained control and roles map cleanly to agents.
Code-writing and agent debate: pick AutoGen when iterative loops and multi-agent conversation drive the workflow.
OpenAI-native stacks: pick the Agents SDK when you are already on OpenAI models and want built-in guardrails plus handoff semantics.
Pure answer-quality gains: pick Together AI MoA when you want better LLM outputs at inference time without building orchestration.

The specialized ops workflows teams ship expose where this matching breaks down. Customer support triage has to read the CRM account tier at ticket creation. RevOps lead scoring depends on product usage, Stripe billing, and support tickets joined to the CRM record. FinanceOps invoice matching reconciles purchase orders, vendor invoices, and goods receipts. Every one of these reads across CRM, billing, and support at once, exactly where single-system framework demos stop.

Why Does Data Access Decide Whether These Frameworks Work?

When an agent assembles context at runtime, the orchestration framework can be perfect, and the deployment can still fail. The reason is structural: every source the agent needs is a separate system with its own latency, schema, and identity model, and the framework does not solve any of that. Four costs land at once:

Network round-trips stack up: every source adds a round-trip, and sequential tool calls compound latency across agent steps.
Raw payloads flood the context: API responses arrive unfiltered and consume the context window; Anthropic reports that tool definitions alone use 134K tokens before optimization.
Entity resolution is unsolved: the same entity appears differently in CRM, billing, and support, with no reliable way to join them.
Layered architectures increase cost: in MoA pipelines, every proposer reassembles context, and Anthropic measures multi-agent systems using 10 to 15x more tokens than single-agent systems.

Pre-materializing a unified, governed context upstream is what lets any of these frameworks reason across systems instead of stitching data live at every step.

How Does Airbyte's agentic platform Solve the Context Problem?

Airbyte's agentic platform is the Context Store for AI agents, working alongside these frameworks rather than replacing them. It connects agents to the SaaS tools a company runs on, unifies that data into a single searchable layer, and lets agents read, search, and write across systems through a single auth flow.

Two-mode execution runs Search against the Context Store for fast pre-materialized retrieval and Direct against the live API when the agent needs the current state. It ships 50+ agent connectors and integrates with LangChain, CrewAI, LlamaIndex, AutoGen, Pydantic AI, and FastMCP.

For lower-level access, the Agent SDK, Agent MCP, and Agent CLI let developers integrate the Context Store directly into custom stacks. In our launch benchmark, agents made 40% fewer tool calls and used up to 80% fewer tokens.

Ready to Give Your Agents Cross-System Context?

Orchestration design is converging while data access is diverging. Coordination patterns are increasingly substitutable; the real differentiator is whether agents can read your business at all. Picking a framework without solving the data layer just delays the same problem.

Airbyte's agentic platform fills that gap with a unified, cross-system context layer via the Context Store, where agents first search the indexed context and then use Agent Connectors for real-time reads, writes, and actions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many Layers Does a Mixture-of-Agents Pipeline Typically Use?

Wang et al.'s reference configuration uses four layers, each with three proposer agents, followed by a final aggregator. Most production deployments use fewer, often one or two, aggregation layers to keep latency and cost manageable, since each additional layer roughly triples per-query cost.

Can You Combine Multiple Frameworks in One Production System?

Yes, and many teams do. A common pattern pairs LlamaIndex for retrieval with LangGraph for orchestration, or uses the OpenAI Agents SDK for OpenAI-native agents alongside CrewAI for parallel role-based crews. The integration cost is usually session and memory handoff, not the frameworks themselves.

What Does Self-MoA Mean for Framework Selection?

Self-MoA showed that aggregating multiple outputs from a single strong model can outperform mixing outputs from different models, achieving a 6.6% gain on AlpacaEval 2.0. The practical implication is to benchmark a single high-quality model against itself before committing to a multi-vendor MoA stack and its operational overhead.
