How to load data from SFTP to Clickhouse

Learn how to use Airbyte to synchronize your SFTP data into Clickhouse within minutes.

Building your pipeline or Using Airbyte

Airbyte is the only open source solution empowering data teams  to meet all their growing custom business demands in the new AI era.

Building in-house pipelines

Bespoke pipelines are:
  • Inconsistent and inaccurate data
  • Laborious and expensive
  • Brittle and inflexible
Furthermore, you will need to build and maintain Y x Z pipelines with Y sources and Z destinations to cover all your needs.

After Airbyte

Airbyte connections are:
  • Reliable and accurate
  • Extensible and scalable for all your needs
  • Deployed and governed your way
All your pipelines in minutes, however custom they are, thanks to Airbyte’s connector marketplace and AI Connector Builder.

Start syncing with Airbyte in 3 easy steps within 10 minutes

Set up a SFTP connector in Airbyte

Connect to or one of 400+ pre-built or 10,000+ custom connectors through simple account authentication.

Set up Clickhouse for your extracted SFTP data

Select where you want to import data from your source to. You can also choose other cloud data warehouses, databases, data lakes, vector databases, or any other supported Airbyte destinations.

Configure the SFTP to Clickhouse in Airbyte

This includes selecting the data you want to extract - streams and columns -, the sync frequency, where in the destination you want that data to be loaded.

How to Sync to Manually

Step 1: Set Up Secure Access to SFTP Server

Begin by ensuring you have secure access to the SFTP server. You will need the hostname, port number, username, and password (or an SSH key) to access the server. Use an SFTP client or command-line tool to test the connection and verify access to the directory containing the data files.

Step 2: Download Data from SFTP

Use command-line tools such as `sftp` or `scp` to download the data files from the SFTP server to your local machine or directly to the server where ClickHouse is installed. For instance, use a command like `sftp user@host:/path/to/datafile /local/path` to transfer files.

Step 3: Prepare Data Files for Import

Ensure that the data files are in a format compatible with ClickHouse. ClickHouse supports importing data in formats such as CSV, TSV, JSON, etc. If necessary, convert the files to an appropriate format using command-line tools like `awk`, `sed`, or Python scripts.

Step 4: Install ClickHouse Client

If not already installed, set up the ClickHouse client on your machine or the server where data will be loaded. You can download the ClickHouse client from the official ClickHouse website or use a package manager like `apt` or `yum` depending on your operating system.

Step 5: Create ClickHouse Table

Before importing data, create a table in ClickHouse that matches the structure of your data. Use the `CREATE TABLE` SQL command in the ClickHouse client, specifying the appropriate column names and data types. Ensure that the table schema aligns with the data structure in your files.

Step 6: Import Data into ClickHouse

Use the ClickHouse client to import data into the created table. You can use the `clickhouse-client` command with the `--query` option to execute an `INSERT INTO` operation. For example:
```
clickhouse-client --query="INSERT INTO my_table FORMAT CSV" < /local/path/to/datafile.csv
```
Ensure that the data format in the file matches the specified format in the command.

Step 7: Verify and Clean Up

After importing, verify that the data has been correctly loaded into ClickHouse by running a few `SELECT` queries. Check for data accuracy and completeness. Once confirmed, clean up by removing any temporary files from your local system to free up space.

By following these steps, you can efficiently move data from an SFTP server to a ClickHouse data warehouse without relying on any third-party tools.
