When these come together at runtime without coordination, the window can overflow silently. Information buried in non-terminal positions can also get deprioritized within a single inference call.

Four production criteria drive the decision: latency (sub-second SLAs favor pre-materialization; analytical workloads tolerate runtime assembly), freshness (transactional data and right-to-be-forgotten requirements favor runtime; stable reference data favors pre-materialization), query complexity (predictable joins can be done at index time; multi-hop cross-system reasoning requires runtime), and governance (per-request policy enforcement and audit lineage favor runtime assembly with full instrumentation; stable access patterns accept batch audit of pre-materialized snapshots).

What Role Does MCP Play in Agent Flow Architecture?

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a JSON-RPC 2.0 protocol defining how LLM applications communicate with external tools, resources, and prompts. It addresses the N×M integration problem through three core primitives: Tools (model-controlled functions for actions such as API calls), Resources (application-controlled contextual data, such as file contents), and Prompts (user-controlled interactive templates).

No cross-system semantic consistency. MCP defines no mechanism to determine whether "Customer #1234" on a CRM server refers to the same entity as "Account: Acme Corp" on an ERP server. Tool schemas are defined per-server with no shared type registry.
No data freshness guarantees. The resource model includes an optional lastModified annotation but no cache invalidation semantics, TTL, or staleness threshold.
