To start, you need access to Xero's API. Visit the Xero Developer portal (https://developer.xero.com/) and sign up for a developer account. Once registered, you will be able to create an application to get API credentials.
After logging into your developer account, create a new app. You will need to provide some basic information about your app, like its name and the company it will interact with. This process will generate a Client ID and Client Secret, essential for authentication.
Xero uses OAuth 2.0 for API authentication. Implement the OAuth 2.0 flow in your preferred programming language to get an access token. This typically involves redirecting users to a Xero authorization page, where they can grant your app access to their data. Once permission is granted, you'll receive an authorization code that you can exchange for an access token.
With the access token, you can now make API requests to Xero. Determine which data you need (invoices, contacts, etc.) and use the corresponding API endpoints. Make GET requests to retrieve the data. For instance, to get invoices, you might use: `GET https://api.xero.com/api.xro/2.0/Invoices`.
The data returned from Xero's API will be in JSON format. Parse this JSON response to extract the necessary information. You can use libraries like `json` in Python or built-in JSON support in JavaScript to handle this step.
Once you have the data parsed, you may need to transform it to fit your local storage requirements. Ensure that the data structure is clean and organized in a way that will be useful for your needs. This might involve restructuring or filtering the data.
Finally, write the formatted data to a local JSON file. Use file handling capabilities in your programming language to create and write to the file. For example, in Python, you can use `open('filename.json', 'w')` and `json.dump(data, file)` to store the data.
By following these steps, you should be able to successfully transfer data from Xero to a local JSON file without relying on third-party connectors or integrations.
