"With Airbyte, we could just push a few buttons, allow API access, and bring all the data into Google BigQuery. By blending all the different marketing data sources, we can gain valuable insights."
How to Sync to Manually
Before moving any data, you need to understand the data format used by xkcd. Typically, xkcd provides data in JSON format through its API. Familiarize yourself with the structure of this data by accessing the API and reviewing the JSON objects.
Use a script to programmatically access xkcd’s API. You can use Python with libraries like `requests` to send HTTP requests to the xkcd API endpoint. Extract the JSON data and store it temporarily in a format that can be easily manipulated, such as a list of dictionaries in Python.
Firebolt databases are typically queried using SQL, so you need to ensure your data is in a tabular format. Convert the extracted JSON data into CSV or another tabular format. Ensure that each column in your table corresponds to a JSON field, and handle any nested JSON objects or arrays appropriately.
Log into your Firebolt account and prepare the database where you intend to upload the xkcd data. Create a new table with the appropriate schema to match the structure of your transformed data. Define data types for each column based on the data extracted from xkcd.
Use the Firebolt SQL console or a programmatic interface to load the transformed data into your Firebolt database. If using a CSV file, you can use Firebolt's built-in `COPY` command to import the file directly. Ensure that Firebolt's database access permissions are correctly configured to allow this import.
After loading the data, verify its integrity by performing SQL queries on the Firebolt database. Check for completeness and correctness by comparing the data in Firebolt against the original xkcd data. Look for any discrepancies or data loss during the transformation and loading process.
To keep the data updated, automate this extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) process. Write a script that can be scheduled using a task scheduler (like cron jobs on Linux) to repeat the data movement process at regular intervals, ensuring your Firebolt database remains up-to-date with xkcd’s latest data.
By following these steps, you can effectively move data from xkcd to Firebolt without relying on third-party connectors or integrations.
