Chase Zieman

“Airbyte helped us accelerate our progress by years, compared to our competitors. We don’t need to worry about connectors and focus on creating value for our users instead of building infrastructure. That’s priceless. The time and energy saved allows us to disrupt and grow faster.”

Rupak Patel
"With Airbyte, we could just push a few buttons, allow API access, and bring all the data into Google BigQuery. By blending all the different marketing data sources, we can gain valuable insights."
How to Sync to Manually
Step 1: Understand FaunaDB Schema and Data
Begin by thoroughly examining the schema and data in your FaunaDB database. Identify all collections, indexes, and documents. This understanding will help you map FaunaDB data types to PostgreSQL types and plan the data extraction process effectively.
Step 2: Set Up PostgreSQL Environment
Install and configure a PostgreSQL database if it's not already set up. Ensure you have the necessary permissions to create tables and insert data. Familiarize yourself with any specific PostgreSQL configurations that might be necessary for your data types or structure.
Step 3: Design Corresponding PostgreSQL Schema
Based on your understanding of the FaunaDB schema, design a corresponding schema in PostgreSQL. Create tables that match the collections in FaunaDB, and define the appropriate data types for each column. Plan for any necessary transformations or adjustments.
Step 4: Write a Script to Extract Data from FaunaDB
Develop a script using FaunaDB’s query language, FQL, and an appropriate programming language (such as JavaScript, Python, etc.) to extract data from FaunaDB. Use the FaunaDB client to connect and query your database, retrieving data in manageable chunks to avoid memory overload.
Step 5: Transform Data for PostgreSQL Compatibility
As you extract data, transform it to match PostgreSQL’s requirements. This may involve converting data types, formatting dates, adjusting string encodings, and flattening nested JSON structures if necessary. Ensure all transformations preserve data integrity.
Step 6: Write a Script to Insert Data into PostgreSQL
Develop a script to connect to your PostgreSQL database and insert the transformed data. Use a PostgreSQL client or library in your programming language to execute SQL `INSERT` statements or use bulk insertion methods to improve efficiency.
Step 7: Verify Data Integrity and Accuracy
After inserting the data, perform thorough checks to ensure data integrity and accuracy. Use SQL queries to verify row counts, data types, and sample data entries. Compare the original FaunaDB data with PostgreSQL to confirm the migration’s success.
By following these steps, you can effectively move data from FaunaDB to PostgreSQL without relying on third-party connectors or integrations.
