Summarize with AI:

TL;DR

Short answer: with Db2, the first question is not which tool but which Db2. Db2 for LUW, Db2 for z/OS and Db2 for i expose changes differently, and log-based change data capture, the only way to capture deletes without repeatedly querying the database, is supported unevenly. Seven tools:

Airbyte: open-source ELT with a JDBC Db2 source for full and cursor-based incremental syncs, best when Db2 is one of many sources.
Fivetran: managed log-based replication for Db2 for i, with Db2 for z/OS and LUW connectors now in beta and preview.
Qlik Replicate: log-based CDC across Db2 LUW, z/OS and i, a common choice for continuous Db2 replication.
IBM InfoSphere Data Replication: IBM's own log-based Db2 replication, strongest on mainframe estates already standardised on IBM.
Debezium: open-source Db2 CDC that streams changes into Kafka, built on Db2's SQL Replication capture tables.
Precisely Connect: mainframe and IBM i specialist for Db2 for z/OS, Db2 for i and other legacy sources.
Informatica: enterprise integration with PowerExchange CDC for Db2. Now owned by Salesforce.
The Db2 constraint: log-based CDC needs work on the database itself (archive logging, DATA CAPTURE CHANGES on each table, and usually a stored procedure or capture agent), so involve your Db2 team before you shortlist.

IBM Db2 ETL tools extract data from Db2 and load it into the warehouses, lakes and databases where analysis happens. Db2 is still a workhorse in banking, insurance and the public sector, often on-premises or on the mainframe, which narrows the field faster than for a cloud-native source: few tools read Db2's logs, and fewer still cover all three Db2 platforms.

What makes Db2 harder to extract from?

Three things. First, Db2 is really three products: Db2 for Linux, UNIX and Windows (LUW), Db2 for z/OS on the mainframe, and Db2 for i on IBM Power systems, and a tool that supports one may not support the others. Second, capturing changes from the log needs preparation on the database: archive logging must be on, replicated tables need the DATA CAPTURE CHANGES attribute, and most tools install a stored procedure or capture agent. Third, extraction cost matters more than usual, because on the mainframe every query consumes billable CPU, which is why reading the log is preferred over repeatedly querying tables.

How do the IBM Db2 ETL tools compare?

Tool	Db2 platforms	Change capture	Deployment	Licence
Airbyte	Via JDBC	Cursor-based incremental; no log-based CDC	Cloud, self-hosted, Enterprise Flex	Open source
Fivetran	i; z/OS (beta); LUW (preview)	Log-based	Cloud, hybrid	Commercial
Qlik Replicate	LUW, z/OS, i	Log-based	Self-hosted	Commercial
IBM InfoSphere Data Replication	LUW, z/OS, i	Log-based	Self-hosted	Commercial
Debezium	LUW	SQL Replication capture tables	Self-hosted on Kafka Connect	Open source
Precisely Connect	z/OS, i	Log-based	Self-hosted, hybrid	Commercial
Informatica	LUW, z/OS, i	Log-based (PowerExchange CDC)	Cloud, on-premises	Commercial

Which IBM Db2 ETL tools should you consider?

Seven tools teams actually use to move Db2 data, from the most general to the most specialised:

1. Airbyte

Airbyte is an open-source ELT platform with 700+ connectors. Its IBM Db2 source connects through IBM's JDBC driver and supports full refresh and cursor-based incremental syncs, so tables with a reliable timestamp or ID column can be synced without reloading everything. It does not read the Db2 log: the trigger-based CDC option in Airbyte's Enterprise connector set is no longer sold to new customers, and the standard connector is marketplace-supported.

Airbyte fits when Db2 is one of many sources feeding a warehouse and cursor-based syncs are enough. Enterprise Flex keeps the data plane inside your own network, which matters when Db2 sits on-premises under compliance rules, and the Connector Builder covers the SaaS and API sources around it.

Pros	Cons
700+ connectors, so Db2 and the rest of the stack land in one place	No log-based CDC for Db2, so deletes are not captured
Open source and self-hostable; Enterprise Flex keeps data on-premises	Marketplace-supported connector, so test it against your Db2 version first
Cursor-based incremental syncs keep repeat loads small	Each table needs a reliable cursor column for incremental syncs

2. Fivetran

Fivetran is a managed ELT service with 700+ connectors and log-based replication for Db2. It has long supported Db2 for i, and has added connectors for Db2 for z/OS (in beta, reading the log through the IFI 306 interface) and Db2 for LUW (in private preview, using the db2ReadLog API), alongside its HVR product for self-hosted replication. Setup involves installing Fivetran's stored procedures on the Db2 server and enabling archive logging and DATA CAPTURE CHANGES on replicated tables.

Fivetran bills on monthly active rows, so busy Db2 tables with frequent updates can become expensive.

Pros	Cons
Log-based capture across all three Db2 platforms	Db2 for z/OS and LUW connectors are still in beta and private preview
Fully managed, with HVR for self-hosted replication	Requires installing stored procedures on the Db2 server
Captures updates and deletes	Monthly active row pricing rises with update-heavy tables

3. Qlik Replicate

Qlik Replicate, formerly Attunity Replicate, is a log-based replication tool with broad Db2 coverage across LUW, z/OS and IBM i. It reads changes from the Db2 log and applies them continuously to warehouses, lakes and streaming platforms, and is configured through a graphical console rather than code. Qlik also owns Talend and Stitch.

Pros	Cons
Log-based CDC across Db2 LUW, z/OS and i	Commercial licence, priced through sales
Low-overhead continuous replication to many targets	Focused on replication; transformation happens elsewhere
Configured through a GUI rather than code	Self-hosted servers to run and maintain

4. IBM InfoSphere Data Replication

IBM InfoSphere Data Replication is IBM's own replication product for Db2, covering log-based change data capture and Q Replication across Db2 for LUW, z/OS and i. It is the natural choice on mainframe estates already standardised on IBM tooling, and it can deliver changes to Kafka, other databases and warehouses.

Pros	Cons
IBM-supported, with deep integration into Db2 internals	Complex to install and operate
Covers mainframe and distributed Db2	IBM licensing, typically part of a wider agreement
Kafka and database targets for streaming	Not designed for the SaaS sources around Db2

5. Debezium

Debezium is the open-source CDC platform built on Kafka Connect, and its Db2 connector streams row-level inserts, updates and deletes from Db2 for LUW into Kafka topics. Unlike Debezium's MySQL or PostgreSQL connectors, it does not read the log directly: it relies on Db2's SQL Replication capture process writing changes to change-data tables, which the connector then reads. You still need a sink to land the data in a warehouse.

Pros	Cons
Free and open source	Requires Kafka and Kafka Connect to operate
Captures inserts, updates and deletes	Depends on setting up Db2's SQL Replication capture process
Streams changes in near real time	Lands data in Kafka, so a separate sink is needed

6. Precisely Connect

Precisely Connect specialises in getting data out of mainframe and IBM i systems, including Db2 for z/OS and Db2 for i, and delivering it to cloud platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks and Kafka. It suits organisations where Db2 sits alongside other legacy sources, such as VSAM or IMS, that most ELT tools cannot read.

Pros	Cons
Strong mainframe and IBM i coverage	Specialist tool with enterprise pricing
Handles legacy sources beyond Db2	Little advantage if your Db2 runs on LUW only
Delivers to modern cloud targets	Implementation usually involves Precisely or a partner

7. Informatica

Informatica's PowerExchange CDC captures changes from Db2 for z/OS, Db2 for i and Db2 for LUW and feeds them into Informatica's integration platform for transformation and governance. Salesforce completed its acquisition of Informatica in November 2025, and PowerCenter 10.5 left standard support in March 2026, so new projects are directed to Informatica's cloud platform.

Pros	Cons
Log-based CDC across all Db2 platforms	Enterprise pricing and long implementations
Governance, lineage and data quality alongside integration	PowerCenter 10.5 out of standard support since March 2026
Common in regulated Db2 estates	Roadmap now tied to Salesforce

None of these tools handles only Db2, and that matters: Db2 is rarely the only source feeding a warehouse, so weigh how each tool covers the rest of your stack too.

How does Db2 change data capture work?

There are three ways to capture changes from Db2, and they differ in what they catch and how much load they add:

Log-based capture reads Db2's transaction log, through the db2ReadLog API on LUW or the IFI 306 interface on z/OS. It captures inserts, updates and deletes with minimal load, and is how Fivetran, Qlik Replicate, IBM InfoSphere Data Replication, Precisely and Informatica work. It needs archive logging and DATA CAPTURE CHANGES on each replicated table.
Capture-table replication uses Db2's SQL Replication capture program to copy changes into change-data tables, which a tool then reads. Debezium works this way. It catches deletes, but adds a capture process to run and monitor.
Trigger-based and query-based approaches either add triggers that write each change to a tracking table, which adds overhead to every write, or poll tables using a timestamp or ID column, which is simple but misses deletes. Airbyte's Db2 source uses the query-based approach.

If deletes matter, or the source is a mainframe where every query costs CPU, log-based capture is the safer choice.

How do you migrate Db2 to PostgreSQL?

Moving from Db2 to PostgreSQL is a common modernisation project, and it is two jobs: converting the schema and code, and moving the data. Schema conversion covers data types that need explicit mapping (GRAPHIC and VARGRAPHIC, DECFLOAT, and timestamps with more precision than PostgreSQL's microseconds), sequences, triggers and stored procedures written in SQL PL. Data movement is a bulk copy followed by change capture that keeps PostgreSQL in sync until cutover.

AWS Database Migration Service and the AWS Schema Conversion Tool both support Db2 for LUW as a source, and log-based tools such as Qlik Replicate keep the target current through the cutover window. Airbyte can handle the bulk copy and cursor-based catch-up for tables with reliable timestamps.

What data can you extract from IBM Db2?

Db2 is a relational database, and an ETL tool can extract any of the data it holds. In practice that means:

Relational data: tables and views across your Db2 schemas, which make up the bulk of what most pipelines move.
Semi-structured data: XML (stored natively in the XML type) and JSON documents stored alongside relational columns.
Large objects: BLOB, CLOB and DBCLOB columns holding documents, images or long text, which some tools skip or truncate by default.
Spatial data: geographic values such as coordinates and shapes, supported through Db2 Spatial Extender.
Materialized query tables: precomputed result sets you may want to replicate rather than recalculate downstream.

Db2 also exposes catalog tables and system views describing schemas, statistics and performance, but those are operational metadata rather than the analytical data most pipelines are built to move.

How do you start pulling data from IBM Db2?

If you decide to test Airbyte, setting up a Db2 pipeline takes three steps.

Step 1: Set up IBM Db2 as a source

Create a Db2 user with SELECT on the tables you want to replicate. In Airbyte, open Sources, choose New source and select IBM Db2, then enter the host, port, database name, username and password and run the connection test. For incremental syncs, check that each table has a column that increases reliably, such as an update timestamp, to use as the cursor.

Step 2: Set up a destination

Pick where your Db2 data should land: a cloud warehouse such as Snowflake, BigQuery or Databricks, a data lake, another database, or any other Airbyte destination.

Step 3: Configure the connection

Select the tables to replicate, choose full refresh or incremental sync for each one, and set a sync frequency. The process is the same whether you deploy Airbyte Open Source or start with Airbyte Cloud.

Which IBM Db2 ETL tool should you choose?

Start from which Db2 you run and whether you need deletes. For continuous log-based replication, Qlik Replicate, Fivetran and IBM InfoSphere Data Replication are the main options, with Precisely for mainframe-heavy estates and Informatica where governance drives the decision. Debezium is the open-source route if you already run Kafka. Airbyte fits when Db2 is one source among many and cursor-based incremental syncs are enough, especially when the data has to stay inside your own environment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Does IBM Db2 support change data capture?

Yes. Db2 changes can be captured from the transaction log, through the db2ReadLog API on LUW and the IFI 306 interface on z/OS, or through Db2's SQL Replication capture tables. Log-based capture requires archive logging and the DATA CAPTURE CHANGES attribute on each replicated table.

2. What is the difference between Db2 for LUW, z/OS and i?

Db2 for LUW runs on Linux, UNIX and Windows servers, Db2 for z/OS runs on IBM mainframes, and Db2 for i is built into the IBM i operating system on Power systems. ETL tools often support only some of them, so check platform support before anything else.

3. What is IBM InfoSphere Data Replication?

It is IBM's own replication product for Db2 and other databases. It provides log-based change data capture and Q Replication, and can deliver changes to Kafka, other databases and data warehouses.

4. Can you replicate Db2 to Snowflake?

Yes. Log-based tools such as Fivetran, Qlik Replicate and Precisely can stream Db2 changes into Snowflake, and Airbyte can load Db2 tables into Snowflake with full refresh or cursor-based incremental syncs.
