Summarize with AI:

TL;DR

Short answer: Excel is a file, not a database, so the real question is where the file lives. If it sits in SharePoint, Google Drive or S3, most tools here can reach it. If it sits on someone's laptop, far fewer can. Ten tools:

Airbyte: 700+ connectors; its File source reads .xlsx from cloud storage, HTTPS or SFTP on a schedule, self-hosted or managed.
Fivetran: 700+ connectors, picks Excel up from SharePoint, Google Drive or S3. Billed on monthly active rows.
Stitch: 140+ connectors and the simplest setup, now consolidating into Qlik Talend Cloud.
Airflow: an orchestrator rather than an ETL tool; it schedules the Excel ingestion you write yourself.
Talend: enterprise integration with data quality, now Qlik Talend Cloud with no free tier.
Pentaho: open-core visual ETL with reporting attached, suited to scheduled batch loads.
Informatica PowerCenter: mature enterprise ETL, though 10.5 left standard support in March 2026.
Singer: the open tap-and-target spec behind Stitch, now largely unmaintained.
Rivery: cloud ELT with orchestration and reverse ETL built in, billed per credit.
Hevo: 150+ no-code connectors with pre-load transformation, cloud-only.

What are Excel ETL tools?

Excel ETL tools extract data from Excel workbooks, clean and reshape it, and load it into a database, warehouse or lake on a schedule. They replace the manual copy-paste and email attachments that usually move spreadsheet data around, so reports are built from a governed, repeatable pipeline rather than from whichever version of the file someone last saved.

Most Excel ETL tools read files from a shared location such as SharePoint, Google Drive, S3 or an SFTP server rather than from individual machines. For the wider category, see our guide to ETL tools.

What do teams use Excel ETL tools for?

Financial Data Migration

Banks and financial firms use Excel ETL tools to move transaction data from Excel reports into central databases, standardising currency formats and validating transaction codes on the way. For moving whole systems rather than files, see our guide to data migration tools.

Sales Report Integration

Retail companies consolidate daily sales reports from many stores, kept in Excel sheets, into a data warehouse. Excel ETL tools automate this by extracting sales metrics on a schedule and keeping dashboards current.

HR Data Consolidation

HR teams migrate employee records from Excel tracking sheets into an HRIS. Excel ETL tools map employee IDs, standardise job titles and departments, and validate data before it is loaded.

How should you choose an Excel ETL tool?

Start with where the spreadsheets live and how often they change, then check how each tool handles the realities of Excel:

File location: the tool must reach the folder or bucket where files land, whether SharePoint, Google Drive, S3 or SFTP.
Messy layouts: workbooks often hold several sheets, merged cells and header rows that are not on row one; check the tool lets you pick sheets and set the header row.
Schema drift: columns get renamed, added or reordered as people edit files, so you need schema change handling rather than silent failures.
Full or incremental: most tools re-read a whole file each run, which is fine for reports but slow for very large workbooks. For cleaning the data once it lands, see our guide to data preparation tools.

Which Excel ETL tools should you consider?

1. Airbyte

Airbyte is the open-source data connectivity platform for AI and analytics, and among Excel ETL tools it covers both the spreadsheet and everything around it. Its File source reads .xlsx and .xls workbooks over HTTPS or from S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Blob Storage or SFTP, and loads each sheet into the warehouse or lake you choose next to 700+ other sources. For spreadsheets that live in Google Sheets instead, see our guide to Google Sheets ETL tools.

Deployment Options: Airbyte Cloud, Airbyte Flex in your own environment, or self-hosted Airbyte Core

Platform Type: open source, with managed cloud plans

Key Features:

Transform and normalise sheet data in the warehouse with dbt or SQL
Reads files from cloud storage, HTTPS or SFTP, so spreadsheets do not need to sit on a laptop
Scheduled full refresh syncs, so each run reflects the latest version of the file

2. Fivetran

Fivetran is a fully managed ELT platform and one of the Excel ETL tools that picks up files from cloud storage such as SharePoint, Google Drive or S3, adapting to schema changes in the files. It completed its merger with dbt Labs in June 2026. To compare it with alternatives, see our guide to Fivetran competitors.

Deployment Options: managed cloud, or Hybrid Deployment that runs pipelines in your own environment

Platform Type: Commercial SaaS

Key Features:

Pipeline automation
Built-in data quality monitoring
Historical data backfill capabilities

Here are more critical insights on the key differentiations between Airbyte and Fivetran

3. Stitch Data

Stitch is a cloud extract-and-load platform and one of the simplest Excel ETL tools to set up. It was originally built on the open-source Singer specification, though Stitch itself is proprietary, and it offers 140+ connectors.

Stitch was acquired by Talend in 2018, and Qlik acquired Talend in 2023. Investment in the Singer open-source community slowed after those acquisitions, so many community taps are now outdated. Stitch itself offers 140+ maintained connectors.

What's unique about Stitch?

Stitch is the quickest here to get a spreadsheet loading, with a low entry price. The trade-offs are real though: no user-defined transformations, and Qlik now publishes a migration path from Stitch to Qlik Talend Cloud, so the product is being consolidated rather than expanded.

Here are more insights on the differentiations between Airbyte and Stitch.

4. Airflow

Apache Airflow is an open-source workflow management tool rather than one of the Excel ETL tools itself, but you can use its operators to run spreadsheet ingestion jobs. It started at Airbnb in 2014 and lets you author, schedule and monitor workflows as directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) written in Python.

What's unique about Airflow?

Airflow requires you to build data pipelines on top of its orchestration tool. You can leverage Airbyte for the data pipelines and orchestrate them with Airflow, significantly lowering the burden on your data engineering team.

Here are more insights on the differentiations between Airbyte and Airflow.

5. Talend

Talend is a data integration platform and one of the enterprise Excel ETL tools, covering data integration, management, quality and governance in one suite.

What’s unique with Talend?

Talend pairs integration with data quality and governance, which matters when spreadsheets feed regulated reporting. Worth knowing before shortlisting it: Talend Open Studio, the free open-source edition, was retired on 31 January 2024, and Qlik acquired Talend in 2023, so it is now sold as Qlik Talend Cloud with no self-serve tier. If that changes your plans, see our guide to Talend alternatives.

6. Pentaho

Pentaho, from Hitachi Vantara, combines ETL with business analytics in one platform for data integration, data mining and business intelligence. Its Pentaho Data Integration designer reads Excel workbooks natively through a visual, drag-and-drop interface.

What is unique about Pentaho?

What sets Pentaho data integration apart is its original open-source architecture, which allows for easy customization and integration with other systems and platforms. Additionally, Pentaho provides advanced data analytics and reporting tools, including machine learning and predictive analytics capabilities, to help businesses gain insights and make data-driven decisions.

Pentaho Data Integration has a free developer edition, while the enterprise edition is licensed and sold through Hitachi Vantara, so production deployments usually involve a sales conversation. For other open options, see our guide to open-source ETL tools.

7. Informatica PowerCenter

Informatica PowerCenter is a mature enterprise ETL tool covering data profiling, cleansing and transformation, deployed in the customer's own infrastructure. It is an enterprise product with no self-serve option. Two things to check before shortlisting it: Salesforce completed its acquisition of Informatica in November 2025, and PowerCenter 10.5 left standard support in March 2026.

8. Singer

Singer is also worth mentioning as the first open-source JSON-based ETL framework. It was introduced in 2017 by Stitch (which was acquired by Talend in 2018) as a way to offer extendibility to the connectors they had pre-built. Talend has unfortunately stopped investing in Singer’s community and providing maintenance for the Singer’s taps and targets, which are increasingly outdated, as mentioned above.

9. Rivery

Rivery is a cloud-based ELT platform founded in 2018 and one of the Excel ETL tools with transformation, orchestration and activation built in. It offers 150+ connectors, and pricing is usage-based in Rivery Pricing Units, which vary by source and can be hard to estimate in advance.

10. HevoData

Hevo Data is a cloud-based ELT platform with 150+ integrations and built-in transformations, so you can apply mappings and enrichment before data reaches the destination. It also supports syncing data back to applications.

None of these Excel ETL tools is specific to spreadsheets, and that is the point: Excel data is usually most useful once it sits next to the CRM, finance and product data in your warehouse. For warehouse-side options, see our guide to Snowflake ETL tools.

What can you actually extract from an Excel file?

An Excel workbook holds more than the cells you see, and what an ETL tool can reach varies:

Sheets and cells: cell values and sheet data, which every tool can read.
Formulas: the calculated value of a formula is usually extracted, not the formula itself.
Named ranges and tables: named ranges and Excel tables are readable by some tools, which makes extraction more reliable than fixed cell ranges.
Charts, pivots and macros: charts, pivot tables, macros and formatting are rarely extracted; rebuild those in your BI tool instead.

An Excel file has no API in the sense a SaaS source does. A connector opens the file and reads the sheets, so what you can extract depends on the tool's parser rather than on an API contract. Most tools read cell values and sheet structure; few expose charts, pivot tables or macros.

Why not just use Excel as the ETL tool?

While Excel's Power Query offers basic ETL capabilities like data extraction, transformation, and loading to other worksheets, it falls short of enterprise-scale ETL. Excel hits memory limits with large datasets, lacks proper version control for transformations, and can't handle concurrent users effectively. For production ETL pipelines, Excel's limited automation options and absence of robust error handling make it risky. Besides, scheduling regular ETL jobs and maintaining audit trails - critical requirements for data engineering - are not natively supported in Excel.

How do you start pulling data from Excel?

If you want to test Airbyte, you can be reading Excel data in three steps:

Step 1: Set up the File source for your Excel workbook

In Airbyte, open Sources, choose New source and select the File source. Choose Excel as the file format, pick the storage provider (HTTPS, S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Blob Storage or SFTP), and enter the URL or path to the workbook with any credentials the provider needs. Test the connection, and Airbyte will read each sheet as a stream.

Step 2: Set up a destination for your extracted Excel File data

Choose the destination for your Excel data. This can be a cloud data warehouse, data lake, database, cloud storage, or any other supported Airbyte destination.

Step 3: Configure the Excel File data pipeline in Airbyte

Once you've set up both the source and destination, you need to configure the connection. This includes selecting the data you want to extract - streams and columns, all are selected by default -, the sync frequency, where in the destination you want that data to be loaded, among other options.

The process is the same whether you start with Airbyte Cloud or run self-hosted Airbyte Core.

Which Excel ETL tool should you choose?

Excel is the most common source in this whole category and the least well served, because a spreadsheet is a file rather than a system you can query. Start with where the files live. If they sit in SharePoint, Google Drive or S3, Airbyte, Fivetran and Stitch can all pick them up on a schedule and the choice comes down to pricing basis and whether you want to self-host. If they sit on individual machines, the honest answer is that no tool fixes that, and the first job is getting the files somewhere central. And if the spreadsheets are themselves the output of a system that has an API, extract from that system instead.
